LOL @ the Robbie Lawler hype

There's a big thread up now about how Lawler is gonna KO Rory. This despite Rory just coming off a dominating performance (though not entertaining) against Jake Ellenberger, a much better power puncher.

You are a hater and so biased. Ellenberger hits harder but Lawler is a FAR better striker. Lets not forget that Rory got tagged pretty hard by Che Mills who isnt even UFC standard. If it stays standing then Rory could be in trouble.

He will however just take Lawlor down for the win.

Fully agree. Lol at lawler and macdonald. We already saw that fight (Rory v Ellenberger). I saw Rorys jab enough for now. Give us Rory vs Pierce or Maia v Shields winner.

Lawler can win at any moment against anyone. He doesn't always "put it all together", and has been inconsistent in the past, but is and exciting fighter none the less. Do I think he can beat Rory? Yes, I do, I would favor Rory though 60/40. I'm a little biased though, since the Tiki fight, I've been a fan of Lawler. The second shot he threw that just missed Tiki's head was such a hard thud, I was actually happy it didn't land for Tiki's sake. Bottom line is he packs power and comes to fight. I don't think he deserves a fight with Rory right now, Voelker isn't a top 10 fighter, but I'd like to see him fight a Top 10'er for sure.

He is very successful in his actual UFC carrier and so the hype is OK..

Yes, let's see how he can handle with other top guys and some other fighting styles but in general, he's on the roll..

I can't wait to see his next fight, I hope he won't fuck it up..

Anyway, didn't he switch the gym lately ? As far as I know, he did and from that time he is doing really great so that is the other reason for hyping him...

Are we talking about the same Lawler that got outstruck by a faded Babalu?

Yep.

The same one who lost to a top 15 Babalu

At 195.

With Babalu entering the cage a good 15 pounds bigger than Lawler.

Don't care if he loses, he's just fun to watch.

hes a great fighter and hes one of my favorites for sure - hes real exciting too, i dont think people actually think hes a title winner or anything, i see him getting submitted or ko'd by the best, but hes still someone who deservedly gets a lot of attention

Shertards are out in full force. Lawler left his weight class and took fights at MW and as high as 195 pounds. Funny how Bj Penn gets praised for fighting out of his weightclass (and losing) but Lawler is now over hyped because he dropped fights fighting guys he shouldn't be fighting. At 170 pounds, Lawler has been a beast since 2002. The hype is justified IMO. Dude also won the Icon sport title at 185 and the Elite XC title and beat some decent fighters above his weight class (Lindland, Melvin, scott smith, Ninja, Villasenior, Vitale ect). Shertards seem to forget that.

I think he's a really good fighter. I don't think he'd beat rory or gsp but has a shot against most everyone else in the division

extremely ignorant thread, anyone can see that he has made improvements...and the fact that you are judging him by his Wikipedia page tells me you are probably a fan-can anyways

He's fun as hell to watch. He keeps fighting like that, he'll be employed with the UFC a long time (win or lose).

If I made a

GSP v. Robbie poll

and

GSP v. Rory poll

Less than 20% of the people will pick Robbie in both. And half of the people picking Robbie would be doing so just because they like him more than the other guys.

i dont agree

i think a lot of people including myself can see robbie lawler beating creepy mcdonald

Not a troll thread, not a fighter bashing thread. Seriously. This is about the recent hype of Robbie Lawler, which has gotten completely out of control. People are saying he'd beat Rory, he'd beat GSP, he'd beat the top 5, and so on. This isn't criticism of Robbie Lawler (who I wish the best of luck to), but rather a reminder to sherdoggers who think two KO's in a row = worldbeater.

First of all, he does have a nice win over Koscheck, and another nice win over Voelker. But that's it. The Kosckeck win was great for his standing and put him in the top 10 in official rankings, but the win over Voelker means almost nothing. Voelker is not a top 15 guy and has never been. He lost to Patrick Cote in his previous fight, which should say it all. It's a flashy win but it means nothing in terms of rankings.

With that out of the way, let's looking at Robbie Lawler as a fighter. He's young, 31 years old, and is looking good. But his record shows a different story. He went 3-5 in Strikeforce and is 5-5 in his last ten fights. He's lost guys like Lorenz Larkin, Babalu and Tim Kennedy in that streak. These are not top 10 fighters. And that's just his recent fights - if you go back farther you can see that Lawler has always been a 50/50 fighter. One fight he wins, one fight he loses. He's a good fighter, but he's not a consistent fighter. To those introduced to him by his recent UFC results he looks like a superstar, but to those who have been around a bit we know that he gets a nice win or two then crashes back down to Earth in his next fight.

Now to those saying his losses are at MW and his last 2 wins show that he's a beast at WW, remember that he went to MW for a reason. He lost to Evan Tanner, Pete Spratt and was KO'd (!) by Nick Diaz with one punch. It was awhile ago, but he didn't go to MW because he felt it was his natural weight class, he went there because he was chased there. And now he's back to WW and people are thinking that this is his weightclass, this is where he's always belonged, and they don't know why he wasn't always a WW.

When Robbie fights some of higher ranked UFC fighters you are going to see why he's not taken as seriously as some of you may want as a top contender. He's got an impressive skillset which he uses with a lot of aggression and power to finish fights, but against more complete, skilled fighters his gameplan doesn't usually play out the way he wants to. When he wins, he tends to win spectacularly (he does not decision win people), but he also loses about half his fights. His gameplan is too straight forward to work against the top UFC guys, and especially against someone like Rory Mac, who people are thinking is going to lose to Lawler if Dana gets the fight put together like he wants. Rory in particular is too big, too rangy, and too good at keeping distance to lose to Lawler. He just left MW and he's going to beat a massive WW? Smart money is that Rory Mac is a huge favorite in that fight. Same for most other top fights.

That said, Lawler is always entertaining and great to watch. When he wins, he wins in exciting fashion. Just don't forget that he's been here awhile and never really been a contender. Smart money is he ends up ranked 12-15 and sits around there.

I agree with Ts to a degree..A fight with Rory would definitely see him as a 3-1 underdog(give or take a little)-

I think Ellenbergers better than Lawler and Mcdonald would beat Lawler with ease.

Lawlers entertaining and I'd love to see him make a run but it aint happening.

Lawlers always been talented and it seems he's got his shit together but it isn't ten years ago. His hypetrain is driven by a spanish driver doing 120 on a 50 track.

nice reference to recent events!

I saw Robbie lose alot in Strikeforce so doubt he can beat Rory. He is a good fighter though. The OT was pretty well written and made good points

Agree that he's very inconsistent. He also shows questionable decision making in fights at times. That being said the best Robbie Lawler who makes the right calls in the cage is one of the most dangerous fighters at WW. Less wrestling than Hendricks but respectable TDD with much more varied striking can even lay GSP out on the right/wrong night. He's harder to plan for than a guy like Hendricks.

As far as age....it's not the number of years, it's the miles on the motor. Lawler has been in a lot of wars. He takes concussive blows, unlike a GSP who's face is all fucked up but it's all superficial damage.

Give him two or three top fifteen fighters. If he gets past them, I don't see a problem with a title shot. This sport forgives inconsistency if you can put together a credible streak to justify a title shot, especially if you've built a name for yourself in the sport and he has certainly done that.

robbie KO's 2 more mediocre fighters and he can earn the title shot.

most fans have no clue about his tenure.

u cant expect everybody to have a GOAT or a JBJ record, since lawler returned to WW he is being outstanding so stfu
