I said that because I take great pride in the fact I have always been able to break into any house/apartment I put my mind to but I wasn't willing to risk climbing around balconies etc on the 8th floor in the rain.

Believe me it was with a feeling of great sadness I called the locksmith but really nothing else I could do.

Ah ok I got ya. And I get the same way about things. If I put my mind to doing something...I WILL figure out a way to do it. And that's what's cool about lockpicking, or getting into a place that's locked up (be it by door, window, vent, whatever). It's a puzzle. Troubleshooting, if you will. And you can be pretty creative about solving the puzzle. Artistic even. I just find that interesting.

I tried to learn a little lockpicking during a time which I had trouble sleeping. I started on Rubik's Cube, and simply needed another sort of puzzle after that grew old. I never used a set of proper tools, just a haripin to work the tumblers and a clip from a pen cap to get leverage. Most of the larger padlocks I worked with was pretty easy, but I never got to the point where I could pick a proper lock with regularity. I could probably have gotten further with more preserverance, but I kind of felt I need to upgrade my tools and buy a lock cylinder if I wanted to have progress.

Not sure why people so immediately link picking tumblers to crime. I'd imagine the amount of break-ins featuring a picked lock is neglible, since the main reason to pick a lock is if you care about not damaging property. Stolen cars might be a different story.

Also, pro tip. If you're going to practice on your own front door, do it while the door is open.

How to pick handcuffs and zip ties


Pro Tip: every man should carry a bobby pin or paper clip in his wallet



3 Methods



Method 1: Escaping Standard Handcuffs with a Makeshift Key

^ If you're using a bobby pin, remove the plastic tip first.

^ Place it into the keyhole. Find the keyhole on the handcuffs and place the straight piece of wire inside of it. Only place it halfway inside the key hole.

^ Bend it. With the wire placed inside the keyhole, bend it about 70 degrees.

^ Now bend it the other way. Put it back in the hole and bend the end again. You should end up with an angle shaped like a squiggle.

^ Insert the "key" in the hole. Find the hole again and wiggle the bent part into the hole so that it points toward the locking arm. It should be at a 90-degree angle to the keyhole.

^ Twist it and spring the cuffs open. Just like you would with a key, twist the piece of wire. It should lift the locking device inside and click the cuffs open.
You may have to practice twisting the key in both directions before it springs open. Be patient.

Method 2: Escaping Handcuffs With A Shim

Find a flat piece of metal. You can use the clip from a pen or another small, flat, thin piece of metal to do the job. It must be about as thin as a credit card, and narrow enough to fit into the locking mechanism on the cuffs. This bit of metal is called a shim.

Insert the shim between the locking mechanism and the teeth. Slide it up into the locking mechanism so that it runs along the teeth; you're essentially sticking it into the cuff along the rim.

Tighten the cuff a notch. With the shim in place, tighten the cuff just one notch.

Push the shim and unclick the cuff. As you're tightening the cuff, push the shim. The cuff should unclick.

Escaping Zip Tie Cuffs

Tighten the tie. In order for this method to work, the tie should be as tight as possible. This makes it easier to break. Whether your hands are cuffed in front of you or behind, pull the end of the tie to tighten it.

Position the tie lock between your wrists. Turn the tie so that the lock is centered between your wrists. The lock is the weakest spot, and in order to break the tie, it must be in this centered position.

Hit the tie against your butt or stomach. Using a quick, tight motion, raise your arms and hit the tie against your butt, if your hands are tied from behind, or your stomach, if your hands are tied in front. The tie should break on impact.
Open your elbows on impact. This puts even more pressure on the tie.

Let your hands spring back from your body. The point isn't to hit yourself as hard as you can. Instead of ramming your hands into your body, let them bounce back after impact.

cool, very informative thread imo, is it really true like in some old movies a guy opens a door with a card?

Yes on some doors. Most locks these days you probably can't. But on doors inside houses you sure can a lot of them. You slide the card behind the sloped side of the bolt and you can work it until its pushed back into the mechanism and blocking it from being latched. You can use a knife or even a coat hanger. Using a coat hanger you have to be quick to open the door right when it slips the bolt from the latch because its gonna go right back in.

This is useful to know if you ever have a broken lock or door knob in your house. If you use it for criminal acts you are a butthole. And it will not work on exterior doors on houses. The slope should be completely inside the latch and not exposed.

Yep. I lost my key my Junior year of College and opened the door every single day with an old Bank of America Debit Card because I was too lazy to get another one made. God damn, that is like the pinacle of laziness...

Lmfaoo another similarity buko. I broke the key off in the lock of my bedroom door at college so I did the same so I could still keep my roommates out of my room.

Thanks Jaeger. And yep, HugeFanSmallBod, you're right. I've done the credit card thing on my bedroom door several times. Works on inside doors pretty well, but not for front doors.

If true, and it sounds like it is, I think that's pretty awesome. Your dad was teaching you to be a survivor. Real men should know how to get into your locked house, or car, or even out of handcuffs (should the need ever arise).

This thread isn't about picking locks for criminal purposes. But realistically, let's say something crazy goes down; like war, or riots, or a natural disaster, etc. and things get chaotic around you. If you know how to get into places and cars or whatever, to get what you need to survive, then this is a life skill, right? It's like owning a gun, it's better to have this skill and never need it, than to need it and not have it.

Plus, it'll impress the fuck out of chicks since they dig the bad boys




Yeah I locked myself out of my camaro like 4 times, and had to use the old coat hanger (or car antenna) through the window seal trick. It works. I actually got pretty quick at it.

Knowing that trick will save you time and money.

We see today if I still got the gift to do this and it's a convertible which is easier.

I got my hands on lockpicking/ break in kit that repossession companies have
(came with a massive instruction manual which was good reading)
from a friend of mine who used to work for a particular company.

I locked my keys in my car like an idiot and he told me i could borrow it for the day.
Once i read in it the type of cars i could get into with this kit (certain ferrari's)
I told him that i was going to start jacking italian exotics.

His response

" i dont care what you do with it man,just give it back to me by 6 tonight"
