Lockpicking. Let's face it, in this day and age, this is a skill that you might need to know.

How it works:

Inside every lock is a puzzle that can only be solved by the matching key. The main variation in lock designs is the nature of this puzzle, specifically the number of pins and the order in which they ‘unlock’.

Using a tension wrench as a pick, one inserts the pick into the keyhole and lifts the individual pins one-by-one. The object is to lift each pin pair up as if pushed by the correct key, which is indicated by feeling or hearing a slight click. This happens when the upper pin falls into position on the ledge, which keeps the pin wedged in the housing. Using this method, you move each pin into the correct position until all of the pins are pushed completely into the housing, at which point the plug rotates freely, allowing one to open the lock.

I'll update this thread with other types of locks, like handcuffs, later on.

Update: How to pick handcuffs and zip ties. See posts 45-47

When I was younger like 14 years me and my friend were set on learning that skill.
Something went wrong with buying the lockpick set and we never looked back again.

Everyone should know how to at least break into their own homes/car.

I snapped so many picks in Skyrim.

My father taught me tumblers, padlocks, and car lock picking at a very young age.

Not sure his motive but I am damn good at it.

cool, very informative thread imo, is it really true like in some old movies a guy opens a door with a card?

Not sure how much this should be discussed, but there are some locks that can be jimmied open with a credit card or something similar. A lot of doorknobs are easily opened, but a credit card isn't going to help if a door is also bolted.

Yep. I lost my key my Junior year of College and opened the door every single day with an old Bank of America Debit Card because I was too lazy to get another one made. God damn, that is like the pinacle of laziness...

I got pretty good at it when I was younger. It's a skill that takes practice. The more you practice the better you get. I probably suck at it now.

This skill is very useful imo. I learned how to a few years back. I'm far from a pro, but I can pick a few locks. A bump key is one of the best tools to have in your arsenal. They can be easily made as well. I made mine in literally a couple minutes. Thanks for the thread op. I'll bookmark this so maybe I can learn a little more

Im actually pretty descent at lock picking but mostly just breaking into homes from my time as a property preservationist for a subcontractor through mortgage companies.

Since I would have to put new knobs and deadbolts on the doors to the property I was able to destroy the existing locks to gain entry. I would normally just drill out the pins with a drill bit and if they fall out correctly, you can just turn the lock with a screw driver.

It's a good skill that can be handy at times and I got use a clothes hanger on my old car to get the keys out. I garaged it a few weeks ago and locked the keys in it.
