Not to sound like some teenage rebel but I remember back before the UFC, I would worship the NFL and all of the BS that came with liking it. I would watch mainstream sports and care about mainstream stuff.
No idea what happened during the pandemic but it is like loving the UFC has made me almost hate the NFL, NBA, and most mainstream sports. Then I do not even want to fit in with most mainstream people that want to watch the NBA playoffs because I find it all so cringe. Do not watch the NFL unless it is the playoffs.
I feel like the UFC has almost carved out some weird counterculture for people that are sick of mainstream sports and fitting in entirely with mainstream society. I find the NFL and NBA so cringe these days and especially after the pandemic.
Wondering WTF happened.
Anyone else?
I have a theory about this. I personally still love Mainstream sports and watch them, but MMA (I include Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Jujitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, etc.) is by far my favorite.
My theory is that MMA is so high stakes, it gives a rush other sports can't touch and the best part is that it can end at any moment, raising the stakes the entire fight. Say you're watching a fight that is 5 rounds, scheduled for 25 minutes, but that fight could potentially end 4 seconds into the fight via flying knee. Plus, you have multiple fights on a Fight Card. So every fight presents it's own unique story, challenges and potential for ending at any moment. Whereas when you watch the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. the game will go the full length of time no matter what. Say it's a blow out, still going to be a 60 minute football game, 4 quarter basketball game, 3 period hockey game, 9 inning baseball game, etc. Thus, after watching a lot of MMA, some can become jaded to this style of watching sports. It doesn't feel high stakes unless it's a close game, and even then, it doesn't become high stakes until say the 4th quarter in football, or the 7th inning beyond in baseball, the last 8 minutes or so of basetball/hockey, etc. So when you're watching fighting you're hypothetically on the edge of your seat the whole time, where as with other sports, you get excited when big moments happen, but you may not necessarily be on the edge of your seat until those home stretches of close games.
