This is a pretty devastating story. The man is a Navy vet, and he had a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm. He was trying to help break up a fight (without the use of his gun), his gun fell out of his holster, and when he tried to pick it up a police officer shot him. Conflicting reports have been given on whether or not the shooting was justified. Some onlookers thought the police were overzealous, others believed the police gave adequate warning not to touch the gun. The entire incident was caught on video.

Tragic, but completely inappropriate to get involved in a scuffle like that while carrying.

Not giving that video a view, but if so that's extremely unfortunate.

No, being an adult is expected. Some of us like to diffuse conflict because we're men.

Why do Universities have police responding to incidents off campus?

If you watch the video it was pretty unnecessary. Police were there, he gets involved, falls, loses his gun, goes to get it despite being told not to, and unfortunately gets shot.

You sound like a badass, what's your street fighting record?

The incident started well before the police arrived, and he had been trying to keep these guys apart the entire time. So when he got involved, he was the only one there to help (if you can call it help).

At the point of the shooting his help was more of a hindrance. There was too many people and he just got in the way. Coupled with zero weapon retention.

Look, if you don’t have proper weapon retention you are far more of a liability to yourself and others than any kind of help.

The answer is more guns

Well, if he would have just complied, he may not have gotten shot.

Looked like it was on his hip, which you can do in Portland with the valid concealed carry license. Seems even more reckless to wade into a street brawl. Bad decision-making all around on this man's part.

Justified shooting. Now, I have been upset about some dick trying to break up a fight but ain't got to shoot someone over it.

Sorry for the group response, but these all deal with the same issue. So how do you make sure that people who carry a concealed weapon have proper weapon retention? This guy was a military veteran and lost control of his firearm. I've seen a lot of calls for it to be easier to get a permit to carry, and for more people to carry on a daily basis. My concern is that most people are not responsible enough to carry a gun, and many aren't even responsible enough to own a gun.

I think attitudes are different based on location. In lower populated areas it may not be as big of a deal. In urban settings, I really do not think you'd want a large portion of the city walking around with a loaded firearm on their waistband. There is a different attitude and a different environment to deal with.

This country is so fucking dumb it hurts.

Police are afraid everyone is carrying weapons and the GOP promotes everyone carrying guns.

Great spot to be in eh

Being a military veteran dosent automatically make you some sort of weapons expert. In the navy don’t they just shoot 22s at an indoor range during basic training???

You do realize that if you switched GOP for DNC (if Hillary was elected) we would still have all the guns that we do now and there would be no difference in in gun laws???

Now piss off and stfu with your but but but the gop but but but Trump bs.

So the police are trigger happy and constantly on edge because they think everyone is armed as well as knowing how many guns there are in circulation but one political party thinks the entire public should be armed.

You don’t see how that’s a recipe for disaster
