I'm going back to school to get my masters and I am in need of a new computer. Currently, I just have a IPad. I know close to nothing about computers. I'm doing an online program so I want something reliable, and has a decent amount memory. Is 6gb ok? I'm mostly going to be writing reports, and researching, but I will also use it for Netflix action while traveling. I also will need to do some photoshopping, what are good programs I could get for that? Looking for something cheap, but reliable.

I have been looking at

Or something cheaper like

Again, I know nothing. Recommendations?

I hear they're doing good things at Apple.

I'd just go with the highest rated mid grade one. It's not like you're wanting to do anything special with it.

I like my 17" Macbook Pro. I'm now just looking at replacing it (have had it about 10 years, zero issues), it still actually works ok, just want something lighter and faster. So I'm probably gonna just get a 13 or 15" model. You can get used ones a couple years old from the Mac store that will do way more then you need it to, plus you're familiar with Mac. Just super easy to use and reliable lap tops imo.

I have a HP pavillion similiar to the second image. It's perfect for me.

I'd look for something with Windows 7.

I like ultrabooks for portability. 15s are heavy as heck, bro.

Dell xps 15 is fcuking sexy. If you have the cash, get an msi or alienware 13. Mid-level gaming laptops in an ultrabook body. If you aint gaming, xps is more than enough.

@strike63 you really threw a wrench into the works when you said "I'll also need to do some Photoshopping." Because everything else you mentioned--writing reports, playing on the Internet, watching Netflix--doesn't require a great deal in the way of specs. Most any computer that's on the shelves today will do. But image manipulation always works better on more powerful systems.

Adobe recommends 8 GB of RAM for Photoshop. I think you should shoot for at least that, as well as the best processor you can get within your price range. Then again, if this is only something you'll be doing on occasion and you won't be doing anything too sophisticated, you can probably skimp a bit.

As for your question, "what are some good programs I could get for that?" Well, considering the fact that you're wanting to do some "Photshopping" you could always . . . use Photoshop. But if you want something free and open source, then GIMP is the way to go:

Laptop... I know of this guy's girlfriend who is perfect for the job.

At this time, mac is still the better deal for the average user. Why, after you pay for microsoft office, annual for spam protection, virus protection, etc, your costs over five years are higher for a PC as opposed to a Mac.

But, Mac is on the verge of total collapse and becoming the new Sears, K-Mart, Chipotle, etc. But for now, Mac is the better 5 year investment.

microsoft office, annual for spam protection, virus protection
who the hell pays for that shit

well technically i paid for office, but thats because it was 10$ and i said fuck it.

I repair computers, and my 2 cents is no matter what you get, avoid like the plague Toshiba. Many people get one because the low prices are attractive, but I can say I see more hardware problems with them than all other brands combined.

Everybody online says this crap because all you all are 6'5", bench teh 275, have a 12/10 LA girl, make teh 300K/year, and are an expert computer hacker who has no problems stealing office and security software.

Me, I'm just a normal country hick married to my Boise dime and bench teh 185. I have to pay norton or mcafee tons of money to have my pc running at an optimal performance after looking at my LA 12/10 wife porn

you dont need to steal antivirus, or anti-spam software. there are plenty of good options that are free. and furthermore, there are plenty of options that are a one time payment, whereas it seems you're paying a regular fee? actually, wtf is anti-spam software? does your email provider not already do that for you? If so, you should switch to gmail

i dont get what all this 6'5 bench 275 talk is about.
