Laptop for a grandma, any good?

Any thoughts or comments welcome, but really want to see if you think anything is missing?

Just get them an IPAD with keyboard. It's bright big icons and they can't break it. I got an IMac for my dad recently and I had to change icons because he doesn't read. It's so annoying when I have to tell them to follow the instructions on the screen.

This right here.
I bought my parents an iPad and a MacBook Air. I haven’t had a single tech related call in 3 years. Before that, they had an Android tablet and a windows laptop, I’d get a call every couple of weeks about something not working.

iPad's virtual keyboard can toggle to Japanese and I'm guessing other languages.

Yes agreed with ipad. Easiest interface for someone older to get a hang of and u dont have to worry as much about some asian hackers locking out access as ransom ware or for grifting

very little computer skills will be trouble on a non apple

This.
When I read "very little computer skills", that means that she doesn't need any specific software to me so an iPad sounds perfect.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments people

hey. I just wanna follow up with more info.

u can get a regular ipad.
9th gen. 300ish
Current gen. 400ish
https://www.apple.com/ipad-select/

10 inch screen.

Now if the screen is too small still u might consider the ipad pro which has 12.9 inch screen but is $1100.
https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-pro

u can save $50-100 if u go through apple education store ( u dont need to provide proof either,)

If the 10 inch screen u think is large enough then just get the regular ipad but if u want a bigger screen u might consider getting a refurbished one on amazon. Prices fluctuate though. Im planning to upgrade my moms ipad to the 12.9 2020 pro. It was like $650 at a point. And then it went up so im just waiting it out and i hope it will be a good product as they promise.

what purpose do u want the computer to serve for ur mom?

if u want her to get connected and having fun with youtube and face time and all that shit the ipad is the best most user friendly way.

even so my mom once went on a wrong site which locked her ipad and told her to call a number where some paki-indian-bengali fucks were trying to gain access. Now with an ipad they couldnt so long as she didnt provide any info and thankfully she didnt but if it was a pc that same situation could have resulted in her computer being hijacked.

i also recommend that with non computer savvy family especially parents that u keep access to their email on ur phone and regularly look it over to clean out any phishing attempts.

hope that helps. I think this is a nice gesture on ur part and it can open up a whole new world for ur mom of enjoyment and joy but if it feels complicated and cumbersome it may lead to her giving up on it before she gets the hang of it. So yeah. Ipad is the way to go.

It seems a little pricey to me for the speccs, but I'm sure it's more than enough computer for your mom
Wow, yeah it is. $1500 for an i5 and 8GB of RAM? I’m pretty sure you could find something with either an i7, or an i5 with 16GB for a comparable price.

I’m guessing this thing comes with Windows 11. I’m not sure if that can run well on those specs, but I know that Windows 10 won’t. It will be slow as shit.

Pay attention to the link, fellas. It's in the .au domain. Those are Australian dollars, not USD. $1499 AUD is $1008 USD.

That's the ASUS Vivobook 16x series. This isn't a cheapo series. Those are 16:10 aspect ratio extra wide displays in a larger-than-normal 16" form factor; the displays are OLED; the body is all-metal, extra thin, and can fold out 180 degrees; it comes with dual-copper heatpipes for cooling. Here is a review of an older 11th gen model:

Although it's still a poor price relative to American pricing. Here you can get a Ryzen 7 5800H variant of that series with 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and a discrete 3050 Ti for around the same price, converted:

My top pick as an alternative from mWave would be this Intel NUC M15 unit for $999 AUD, but they're out of stock. Closest thing is the next step up i7 variant of the same series for $1179 AUD. These are solid laptops:

Grandma’s going to be pissed, I don’t think that will support ray tracing for her games.

granny is gonna be pissed when she finds out it wont be able to run grand theft auto 6. don't expect any christmas cards from her this year.
