Hi everyone, I am taking a language proficiency exam in Portuguese in about one month from today so that I can graduate. I have been studying for about a year in Portuguese and understand reading pretty well, the problem is that I have trouble understanding speech. The BYU Flats test is part reading, part speech comprehension. Are there any tips for the test and how to get better understanding speech in the next month?

Go make friends that speak Portuguese ASAP. Talk to at least one of them every day. If you don't think you can make any IRL, Skype with them. Go to a language exchange site. Mylanguageexchange.com, interpals.com, or any of the many others that exist--Google it. Realize that it's a give and take, so you'll have to speak English for them at times, too.

Look for videos on Youtube.

Get a couple of textbooks that have audio components. Obviously the beginner material will be beneath you, grammatically, but the listening comprehension will be useful.

Good luck.

Google GLOSS. That website should help.

For the time that you have, this is what will help you most with your test. Speaking partners will be limited by your level of speaking and will not likely discuss topics that would be on a proficiency test.

DLI knows what they're doing in this regard.

I'm trying to learn French and I find that for speech programs like Pimsleur and RocketFrench are helpfull. When I was in Paris a few weeks ago I was actually surprised how clear the French speak in comparison to Pimsleur and RocketFrench and stuff like that, I dunno if they also have Portugese programs. Oh, btw I also like watching French movies, dunno about the quality of Portugese and Brazilian cinema, though. And yeah, as other's have said, there are a lot of people online looking for people to practise languages with.
