Yeah, I have to agree, "kicking someone when they're down" is literally an American phrase to describe unnecessary retribution, dishonorable behavior and bad sportsmanship. I don't think the majority of average Americans would be ok with it, and if your show is on ESPN, that's much of who's going to be tuning in or tuning out.
But-- I do think there is civilized solution to the problem and that is to score failed TDs against the panic wrestler and if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. A grappler can win a round just by taking their opponent down and not letting them get back up, regardless if damage was inflicted, so they are given points for keeping the fight on the ground where they want it to be, yet a striker is not given the same points for stuffing TDs and keeping the fight standing. Failed TDs should carry the same weight as failed attempts to get back on the feet.
