Kyoto University Kosen Judo Class

Kyoto University is known for great newaza and bellow average standup.
Keep in mind that IJF is looking to launch newaza only tournaments next year, so most probably that is what they will look like.
Good thing is that in international Judo competition there are no belt divisions, so it will be black belt only.
Where did you see that the IJF was doing newaza only tournaments?

Marius Vizer (President of the International Judo Federation) has stated not so long ago that they are looking to do newaza only tournaments soon. There's been rumors for awhile. It will most likely happen.

Hopefully they're "newaza friendly" like Kosen rules rather than "newaza only". Rulesets that enforce the latter are invariably terrible.

Newaza tournaments in judo is nothing new.

Yes, but high level tournaments with real incentive to draw top athletes is something that hasn't really been done. Not well anyway.

I agree. It would be a shame if they started from the knees or some nonsense like that or were required to stay on the knees. That would be about as successful as Steven Seagal's last movie.

Right. I wonder if they would allow BJJ athletes in as well. That would be the most accurate gene pool of ground fighters.

Not sure. We don't know how their system would be set up to qualify for these tournaments, or if their would even be such a system. Still, the rules would be Judo newaza, so it would be interesting to see how Osaekomi would be a factor. It changes the game alot from a JJ perspective. Would high level JJ guys be interested in such a ruleset? I dunno.
