Kowloon Walled City

There's still parts of Hong Kong with staggering population density. Rent is so expensive there that lots of people can't really afford to live there so they live like 15-20 deep in studio apartments and split the rent.
 
Went there once looking for a mirror and to avenge my fathers death. Ended up just arm-wrestling instead.

It was caused by corruption not engineering. Approx 500 people (remarkably) died.

Sampoong was never designed to be a commercial space. The owner applied to have residential units made initially and then bribed his way into changing the building plans into a much larger commercial building on the bones of what was designated to be a smaller residential complex.

Kowloon i suspect have lots of violations im sure but the structure was likely built for its intended purpose, residential units. Sampoong was not.

Did you notice one side of the building sluffing off? It's not going to stay like that forever.
Even the walls aren't straight. It's like jenga, once one part fails it's all going to come crashing down.

Its not sluffing. Look at the space between the buildings, Its absolutely paralelle. That end section is built on a 45 degree and not flat face to the rest of the building.

The problem with the structure was the infastructure not the soundness of the building. As people added on and made changes there was not enough water electricity or gas and what was existing was overloaded. It was more a fire and explosion hazzard risk than it was on risk of collapse.
 
Was it a good thing that Kowloon existed?

If you want a similar vibe, visit Chunkking Mansion in TST. I stayed there years ago when I was initially setting up my HK company and had to do some trips in HK. Backpackers, Indians, hookers, African refugees, it's a weird fucking place. Absolute hell, but it's a big budget option for HK accomodations.

I lived in HK as a child and visited the outer rim of the walled city with my parents in the early 80"s they used to let tourists take pictures for a fee.
