Here's that quote in its entirety: "I don't know if I can beat him. But I want to fight him. It's a huge test for me."

And now onto my take on his comment...

It's pretty smart in my opinion. I think he fucking KNOWS that Andre cannot gain his respect due to a severe lack of punching power in context with him (Kovalev) having a SUPER solid chin.

And like I've said about that potential fight before, it's doomsfuckingday for Andre if they fight.

Yes, Andre is elusive and he can adjust during a fight, but for him to fend off Kovalev is asking a BIT too much given the probability of Kovalev going in there to KILL a borderline feather-fisted boxer... (I'd say Andre's punching power lies somewhere between average and feather-fisted)

And I know, most of you guys think that Ward has a good chance to beat him, but...that's not gonna happen.

Ward is tough. Skillful and crafty however he looked very rusty his last fight and his speed isn't what it use to be anymore.

I'm leaning Sergei just because he is on a roll and confidence is high right now.
The fight game is 50% mental. You have to be hungry and believe in yourself.

Thought Ward looked rusty vs Barrera....? In what way?

Kovalev has a "super solid chin"? Based on what, exactly?

His rhythm and timing was not what it use to be. His speed has declined and he got hit some shots that shouldn't of caught him. Barerra isn't world class by any means,

Observation.

So you're saying he has a super proven chin. Who are these great punchers he's taken big shots from? I'm not saying Kovalev has a bad chin, I'm saying that there isn't close to enough evidence out there to show that he's got a proven granite chin. I mean, he was KO'd in the amateurs and has been down at least twice in the pros (one KD was mostly a matter of balance, the other he was allegedly badly hurt against Darnell Boone, who also hurt and floored Andre Ward). Usually fighters have to show far more than Kovalev has to be credited with a good chin, let alone a great one.

I've observed the way he's responded to clean shots, as infrequent as they may be.

Now, is said "observation" concrete science, well...no, but I think you can agree that at the very least he has a good chin.

Lastly, if I may ask, how would you rank GGG in the chin department?

There have been people who have been touting Golovkin as having a granite chin for a long time. He has never been down amateurs or pros (let alone KO'd), and, I'd even go as far to say that he gets hit more (and is more willing to get hit) than Kovalev. A lot of people in sparring have remarked at his ability to take shots (I think Kovalev has even said that of Golovkin, though, they're sparring stories so take them with a grain of salt). That doesn't necessarily mean that Golovkin's chin is tremendously proven, but it would be a more understandable position than claiming Kovalev has a granite chin.

Well then. We are in agreement about that, as GGG seems to have a GREAT chin by all accounts.

And in terms of Kovalev, yes, judging his ability to take a punch is subjective, but as far as Ward is concerned...he has nothing to worry about, other than getting boxed up.

...which will not happen.

GGG teaches Kovalev just a fraction of his shifting.... and it's game over, man.
Gave over!
What the fug is Ward gonna do now, huh, what is he gonna do?

This is the perfect attitude for a true warrior. Win or lose (and I believe Ward's in for a world of hurt here) I respect the shit out of that sentiment.

I dunno if I can beat him, but I want to find out.

Are you hearing this Stevenson?

I believe he's being genuine; doesn't really strike me as some type of bullshit merchant type. He legitimately respects and rates Ward and has expressed as much in numerous interviews.

Or a guy standing on his foot.

i just wanna see a great fight

neither guy has faced a guy like what they'll face on fight night

Nice statement. But he is still basically a POS and Ward is one of the nicest guys in the sport so I'm hoping for Ward to do what he normally does when they fight.

It was a long lay off, different weight class, against a game opponent

He did decent but yes, if that was Kovalev fighting Ward that night it would have gotten very ugly for Ward

I lean to Kovalev. He is a natural LHW and could fight cruiser.
Ward gets hit flush sometimes. Ward has to be super cautious and try to win a decision. It is an intriguing fight that I would not bet on.
