I'm looking for an affordable place to train BJJ and a Knuckle Up just opened up near me in Gwinnett, does anyone here have any experience with this gym? What about monthly costs? It's been way too long since my last judo session and I need to get back in shape. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. :D

around $90 a month with a two year contract. $200 down.
I train in Douglasville

i pay 100 month at alliance in sandy springs

oh really u train at Alliance in Sandy springs?? i just started bjj for the first time about 3 weeks ago at Alliance.. i doubt i know any of yall yet. but yeah to the TS, i live in gwinnett too and i chose to learn at Alliance Martial Arts up in sandy springs. it is a little far from where i live, but its not too bad considering i only go two or 3 days a week.
but yeah. i pay like 125 a month at alliance. so far its great. everyone there is chilled

I train at Knuckle Up in Kennesaw. Diego Saraiva should still be at the Gwinnett location. I recommend Knuckle Up and Diego Saraiva.

Wow it's a bit more expensive than I imagined. Alliance is a bit too far of a drive for me, as is Paul Creighton's gym. Really the only thing close to me is that Gwinnett Knuckle Up and the Francis Fong Academy, I guess I'll just look into that and pray I can afford it. Thanks for the info! And vnnguyen where you live man it's always good to have another viet guy who doesn't train in tae kwon do/kung fu around here lol.

I train at KnuckleUp in Gwinnett. It's a great gym with some good instructors. I checked out Creighton's gym first, but his prices were too high. He was super nice when I went in there and the students were all good people, too, but I just couldn't get over the cost. I ended up paying $49 for unlimited boxing and kickboxing with a $99 initiation at KU.

Diego is still the head BJJ instructor there. He just won fight of the night at the last UFC, so you know you could be training with worse. Plus, if you feel like it, you can travel to Sandy Springs and train with the Assuncao brothers. If you go to Midtown you can train with Jim Abrille. Those are all great BJJ guys and great instructors.

Stop by KnuckleUp and get a free week. They were giving away cards for a free month at Digger's on Saturday. You can easily find out if you like it or not.

Gracie Barra hloyyy springs is opening July 21, cheap rates for memberships now, ask for Dande, I train with him also.

i see.. so you're viet? but yeah i live in norcross.. i use to do kung fu for 5 years, but then again, i only started in the first place cuz it was the cool thing to do as a middle schooler.. but yeah.. now that i started bjj, i just cant see myself going back to any traditional MA cuz they just arent practical.. but yeah, good luck on finding a school. since you live in gwinnett, I think there is a place on indian trail @ exit 101 called atl martial art center or something like that.. they offer alot of stuff including bjj. i wouldve join that since i live like 5 min away from it, but i didnt really wanna train there cuz i wanted a place with instructors who have better credentials
Knuckle up does seem like a good place too.. that woudlve been my 2nd choice after alliance.. and 3rd woudve been Paul Creighton's gym

lol funny you should mention the Atlanta Martial Arts Center, thats where I used to train Judo and Karate/Jujitsu before I had to quit. It's a great place to train, although I don't think they have any BJJ. Hmm you did kung fu...dude is your first name Vincent? Because you're way too similar to another friend of mine...

Nothing against any of the other instructors mentioned here, but to me it isn't only about money. What are you getting for your hard-earned dollars? I train at Alliance in Sandy Springs also, and I pay 125/month, but for my money I am training with a 6th degree Gracie JJ Black Belt with nearly 40 years of experience (Jacare) -- who actually teaches the majority of the classes himself -- and with some of the best-trained martial artists around. On any given day I could find myself training alongside Marcelo Garcia or Fabio Gurgel or some other world class grappler.

I had visited other schools, and you can always tell the quality of the instructor by the skill level of the students in his school. We had a purple belt fill in for Jacare today, and the class didn't skip a beat. In fact, I was immensely impressed with this 20 year old's grasp of BJJ technique as well as his teaching ability, and I should know as I personally have taught martial arts for many years. This in my mind is a direct reflection of the one who taught him.

I have been nothing but impressed with Alliance and I think it is worth every dollar I spend. I highly recommend them.

I just started training with roberto traven in midtown and it seems worth the money so far

Just to tell you, instead of what some other people may say (the atl bjj scene is like joining a fucking gang to some people) knuckleup fairs just as well in competition as all the other bjj schools in atl. don't feel like shit because someone said your school sucks.

i train at knuckelup in sandy springs under the assuncao brothers. they are great teachers and the classes are amazing

im paying 79 a month for a year contract for everything but Muay Thai (i do have the ability to go to all of the other kickboxing classes)

The best BJJ in the north Ga. area is at Alpha Fighting and Fitness Systems in Hiram and there for 95.00 a month you can take every class they offer.

I checked out Kuckle Up but decided against it because of the price and the way they tried to hussle me. I train at Triple Boxing now and pay around 65 a month for unlimited BJJ, Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, and Boxing.

Knuckle Up has nice facilities, but they really push you on the contracts and the hard sell. It's pretty aggravating, and they have a reputation for being a little on the assholish side to newbies (this was the Kennesaw location back a few years ago).

The problem with Knuckle Up is they only have one world class instructor spread across all their schools, another black belt (Steve), and then I think the rest are brown belts.

Alliance BJJ has better overall cred, but Jacare comes off as very old school -- if you train elsewhere or attend another seminar or even go to someone else's competition, he can get pissy. He's also rude at competitions that I've seen.

I have heard nothing but awesome things about Roberto Traven at Unit2 in midtown. Finally, there's Creighton (a Renzo black belt) who is good, and Eddie Camden at Tiger (he's a Pedro Sauer black belt).

Out in the NW Atlanta area (Cobb/Paulding) there's Alpha Fighting Systems in Hiram, where the head instructor is a brown belt, but that team has been fucking CRUSHING everyone else in the area. It's crazy, they've been accused of sandbagging and haven't even been open for a year (!). At the Bud Cup some of the guys got pissed and competed in blue belt and ended up winning as well -- as white belts. They also took back the team trophy from Bud Cup.

So if you don't care so much about 'name', Alpha Fighting Systems is a good place to train.

Finally there's Fusion Fitness and MMA, which is strictly no gi and very small -- it's pretty much private lessons or so it feels, with about 3-6 people in a class. Limited schedule though (M/W 11:30, T/R 6:30, S 11:30).
