Klay Pittman Belt System?

Actually, the original purpose of the belt system as devised by Kano was for handicapping in competitions. Nothing more nothing less. He copied it from Go, the oriental chess-like game.

I've never heard that before. What I was taught (and read in many places) was that Kano took it from the Japanese public school system, where belts are used for a number of activities (like swimming and Go).

Kano was an education prof at the university (strongly influenced by Dewey, and American educator); what I heard was that he intended the belts to reflect school grades - shodan meant you were in grade 1 (ie knew the basics and so were ready to learn), etc.

I never heard that it was used for handicapping in competitions - and I wonder how it would have worked. They didn't have colored belts initially (white and ten grades of black), so handicapping means shodans competed against shodans, nidans against nidans etc so the upper belts would have very few competitors. In fact, the belt system was developed in 1883, judo founded in 1882, so it would be a long time before they had many numbers to begin with, let alone enough to spread them out in the various grades.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that its very different than what I've heard in many decades of judo.

I don't know about all that....what I do know is that the Adult belt system wasn't set up so a guy could belt test someone once every two months for X amount of dollars and then give them a BJJ black belt in 2 years that usually takes between 8-11 years or more in legitimate schools.

I believe the coloured belt system was set up by Kawaishi in France as a method of student retention, circa 1930s. Judo only had white-black initially IIRC. Even now, the only other adult colour I've seen semi-regularly in Japan was brown and that was in a highschool (Komazawa, in Tokyo)

Klay Pittmans Scam Academy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Machado Scam

All new on the Klay Pittman Scam Review

This just in...not even joking.
It's been leaked that Carlos Machado is going to now start doing belt exams, promoting people to black belt on "black belt program" contracts, and promoting them in between 3-6 YEARS! (Yeah, I wonder which it will be closer to..3 or 6...derrrrrr). He announced this to several of his higher ranked students and Affiliate/Associate members after a seminar this passed weekend. As you can imagine, tons of them while promising not to say anything (you see how well that worked out btw), are SUPER pissed.

Bye bye legitamate BJJ. I guess the non endorsing endorsement makes even more sense now.

"Munnay munnay munnay munnnnay......munnnnay!!!"

we left the RCJ machado affliation this year all of this is very sad

Dude, you really have it out for Pittman's eh? You MAY need a hobby lol.

So the guy is a good business man AND a pretty sick BJJ player, who cares?

Come roll some time and then tell us we don't produce legit guys. We'd love to have you.

Hope your doing well. :)

(Edit: This might be an old thread but I just saw it and felt like adding my two cents, cheers!)

You don't seem to get the problem, no one is disputing klay's skills, but what he's doing is setting precedent for the doomed of bjj belt system... If he's doing it and Michael endorses it,then why the fuck not would a mcdojo not do It?

Suxessful man my ass,he's bastardizing bjj...

Not to mention he's essentially devaluing the meaning of each belt.

A Pittman black belt =/= a regular black belt. You can earn your Pittman black belt via two or three classes a week for 2-3 years.

Who cares about a piece of cloth wraps around your waist. As long as Klay is a legit and knowledgeable instructor, then that's all it matters. I rolled with one of Klay's students when he was visiting AOJ and he was good.

I think the bjj community appreciates that the belt still seems to mean something. That cant always be said of other martial arts

By the way I have been with Carlos Machado for 5 years. I cant say if what was said above is true, because I have not heard of it

But I can guarantee that his belts are legit, from what I can tell over the past 5 years. His purples and up are tough and know their shit

I have not seen any questionable promotions during my time
