Was going to post this thread in the striking and grappling forums but figured i'd probably get biased responses, lol.

So, yeah. I've got good schools for both near me for both, and can't decide... so i'll just go with whichever will get me in better shape.

Hard to tell. I prefer Judo but I think is more difficult to learn. Kickboxing is more immediate to enjoy...especially when you have to punch and kick bags or pads. Of course competing professionally in those two sports is equally harder.

If you want it purely for getting in shape go kickboxing. If its actually a good place to train as you say it is they will whip you into shape in no time if you are serious about it.

Good kickboxing classes are awesome workouts.

Never done judo.

I did judo for a few years, and am now in muay thai. Definitely go kickboxing.

It absolutely, positively, depends on the schools.

Some instructors are insane conditioning/fitness freaks, some are lazy and think that all anyone needs is technique. You'll find both ends of the spectrum (and everything in between) in both arts. Practically every place lets you try them out before committing to anything, so I would suggest you do that and see which you prefer.

Any Grappling has better conditioning in my oppinion, but as mentioned it all depends on the school... McDojo might not have the best conditioning. I find striking more muscular endurance and grappling more cardio and strength... but that could just be me.

Try both... and then tell us yourself???

It depends on your definition of 'getting in shape'

Kickboxing would PROBABLY be your best bet. But the best thing to do in your situation is try both, they should both offer a free session; Decide then.

Keep in mind that getting in shape doesn't necessarily require $80-$150 per month.

Well by 'in shape' i mostly mean get my cardio up. I'm already on a 5x5 at my CC gym. And i want to get into either of these martial arts because i've always wanted to, not just for fitness.

never done judo, i have done muay thai/kickboxing. Go with kickboxing!

Kickboxing is definitely better for your stamina. I tried a couple Judo classes at the same gym I used to kickbox at and the most tiring thing was rolling, which isn't even as demanding on your cardio as hitting the bag if you ask me.

But if you could choose one martial art to excel in, Judo would probably take you farther in MMA than kickboxing would.

TS...if you are looking to "get in shape" a better choice than Judo or Kick boxing, for THAT PURPOSE would be... Crossfit. Go ahead, hate my guts...but its true.

i dont think he emphazises conditioning per say, i think he just wants to look better.

ive never done kickboxing but i hear hitting pads and bags is really good cardio, but thats just word of mouth.

ive been doing jiu jitsu and two weeks ago i lost eight pounds in one week from four or five classes, i could notice the weight loss all over my body, head to toe

but, i would still consider kickboxing just as good if not better if you put the work in, and you probably wont be anywhere near as sore as these blue belts left me

boy, there were some days i could barely walk after bjj, I can only imagine judo. yikes!!!

Kickboxing, there is more emphasis on strength, conditioning, and flexibility. Judo has these, but is based PRIMARILY on technique.

I have trained in judo and muay thai. the muay thai class by far is a better workout. now this is based on my experiance with the schools that i have been to. I have also been to muay thai classes that do nothing but long combos on pads and no sparring. in that case a good judo class with lots of stand up and ground sparring would be better. so just check out the schools and decided which one tired you out the most and which one you enjoyed the most then choose.
I think since they are two completly differant styles of training that you should choose one that you enjoyed more because in the long run you will get a better workout of something you enjoy going to and you will be more successful at the sport.

call the schools up, and see if they'll let you do 1-2 classes for free, and try them

It really depends on the school, so you will just have to check it out. I did some kickboxing for a few months (one on ones) before I started Judo. IMO and this may vary, Judo is much tougher simply because you are constantly using your muscles. We have had some guys come in from striking backgrounds who just get absolutely burnt out from grappling. I'm sure it would be similar for a grappler to go to striking. Different muscles used in different ways.
