Full Trailer for KICKBOXER: VENGEANCE Finally Released

Kickboxer-Vengeance-071516-Dragonlord.jpg

Jean-Claude Van Damme is stepping back into the ring. But like his Expendables rival Sylvester Stallone and Creed, it’s as a mentor. The action star appears in the new Kickboxer: Vengeance trailer, a reboot of the 1989 film Kickboxer — but there’s a new Kurt Sloane, Van Damme’s character in the first one.

Akin to the original, Kurt (Alain Moussi) and his brother Eric (Darren Shahlavi) are martial arts pros in the U.S. and seek a larger challenge overseas in Thailand. A dramatic showdown between Eric and Tong Po (Dave Bautista) results in Eric’s death, setting Kurt on a vengeful path. He knocks on the door of Master Durand (Van Damme) to refine his fighting ability and claim his revenge.

Bautista, Gina Carano, Georges St-Pierre, Cain Velasquez, and Fabrício Werdum are among the professional real-life MMA fighters who appear in the John Stockwell (Blue Crush) film. Kickboxer: Vengeance is out Sept. 2 in theaters and on VOD.

Paige-VanZant-Kickboxer-Retaliation-Dragonlord.jpg

Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Paige VanZant is heading out of the cage and onto the big screen for her feature debut. The UFC’s eighth-ranked Women’s Strawweight fighter and current Dancing With The Stars finalist contestant will be joining Kickboxer: Retaliation.

In the latest pic in the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme-originated Kickboxer franchise, VanZant will play Gamon, a 26-year-old with high-level fighting and shooting skills with some strong criminal connections too. The role was specifically written for VanZant after producers saw her on the ABC dancing competition show this season.

“Paige is the up-and-coming darling of the UFC and her star quality shines through on camera,” producer Rob Hickman of Our House Films said in a statement. “She’s a tremendous asset to the film both as an onscreen talent and as a trainer fighter.”

Retaliation is the sequel to Kickboxer: Vengeance which stars newcomer Alain Moussi, Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Dave Bautista, Van Damme and Gina Carano. Directed and written by Dimitri Logothetis, Vengeance comes out this fall. Kickboxer: Retaliation brings Kurt Sloan (Moussi) to Thailand to fight against Mongkut portrayed by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays formidable The Mountain on Game Of Thrones.

The pic is filming in right now in California and Nevada before heading to Asia in June.

Martial artist Daniel Shahlavi, who appeared in the series Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Arrow, has died, his agent, Kathy Carpenter, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 42. Shahlavi was born in North West England and began practicing martial arts at age 7. He moved to Hong Kong to pursue a stunt career in the early 1990s, where he was tapped to star in Tai Chi 2. He moved to the United States to continue his career, performing stunt work for titles like The Chronicles of Riddick, Night at the Museum, and 300. He also had acting roles in 2002's I Spy, alongside Eddie Murphy and 2004's The Final Cut with Robin Williams. In 2010, Shahlavi appeared in the martial arts film Ip Man 2. The following year he starred in Mortal Kombat: Legacy as Kano.

MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY Darren Shahlavi Joins KICKBOXER

Darren-Shahlavi-Kickboxer-2-Dragonlord.jpg

The upcoming reboot of Jean-Claude Van Damme's cult classic Kickboxer is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated martial arts films coming in 2015. Right on the heels of the announcement that Van Damme would be joining the film in the role of the wise Muay Thai mentor Xian Chow, news has dropped that the talented martial arts action-man Darren Shahlavi, will also be joining the film.

Shahlavi is, of course, well-known to action fans for his appearances in Bloodmoon opposite Gary Daniels and Chuck Jeffreys, Ip Man 2 opposite Donnie Yen, and in the role of Kano in the web-series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. In addition to the Kickboxer reboot, Darren will also be seen opposite Van Damme in the New Year in the upcoming Pound of Flesh as well.

Kickboxer is definitely a must see for martial arts fans in 2015. Stuntman turned action star Alain Moussi will assume the role of Kurt Sloan in the reboot, while Dave Bautista steps into Tong Po’s shoes, UFC legend Georges St. Pierre will also join the film. T.J. Storm and Matthew Ziff have also joined the cast alongside Van Damme, with acclaimed action director Larnell Stovall serving as fight choreographer.

Just about the only bit of bad news has come in the form of Scott Adkins and Tony Jaa ultimately not appearing in the film after The Hollywood Reporter reported a few months ago that they would be a part of the reboot.

Gina Carano has joined the cast of Kickboxer, Radar Pictures' remake of the 1989 martial artist action movie. John Stockwell is directing the movie, which is shooting in New Orleans. Carano worked with Stockwell on her 2013 action vehicle In The Blood. She last appeared on the big-screen in 2013's Fast & Furious 6.

Carano will make up part of the muscle-glistening roll call that includes Guardians of the Galaxy star and newly minted James Bond villain Dave Bautista, X-Men: Days of Future Past stunt performer-turned-actor Alain Moussi, UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (who played Batroc in Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Jean-Claude Van Damme, who is returning to the franchise that helped launch his career. Model-turned-actress Sara Malakul Lane is the love interest.

Kickboxer follows Kurt Sloane (Moussi), a talented martial artist who travels to Thailand, where he must learn the secrets of the kickboxer to avenge his brother's death at the hands of Tong Po (Bautista). Carano will play a fight promoter.

Joseph Valtellini and Joe Schilling Join KICKBOXER Reboot

Joe-Schilling-Kickboxer-Dragonlord.jpg

Kickboxer was released in 1989 and became an instant classic. It launched Belgian action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme to superstar status after his turn in the lead role. The movie also sparked a worldwide boom in the sport. Now it has been decided that it is due for a remake. Filming will begin in New Orleans next week and the producers are aiming for a late 2015 release in theaters.

Van Damme is set to appear in the new Kickboxer only this time - given his veteran years and experience - as the instructor who guides the student on his path. In the original version it was a young Van Damme who went into the jungle seeking Muay Thai training from an old master.

Numerous fighters have cited youthful viewings of Kickboxer as a key driving force in their decision to start training and become fighters themselves. Some went into Muay Thai and kickboxing, others into MMA.

Two welterweight champions are among that number: Georges St Pierre, former holder of the UFC belt, and "Bazooka" Joe Valtellini, current GLORY World Welterweight Championship. The two Canadians are big Van Damme fans and have accepted roles in the remake of the iconic movie.

Also appearing in the film will be California's Joe "Stitch 'Em Up" Schilling, winner of the GLORY 10 Los Angeles Middleweight Championship Tournament. The photo above is from Schilling's Instagram account.

Thai Supermodel Sara Malakul Lane Joins KICKBOXER Remake

Sara-Malakul-Lane-Kickboxer-2-Dragonlord.jpg

On the heels of word earlier this week announcing that Jean-Claude Van Damme is set to star, the upcoming Kickboxer remake has cast Thai supermodel-turned-actress Sara Malakul Lane (Sharktopus, Jailbait) as the female lead, not-so-progressively officially described as the leading character's love interest.

"Sara's beauty, charm and acting skills balance perfectly Kickboxer['s] testosterone and action," says Radar Films' Ted Field. "Alain as Kurt will fall in love, as [will] everyone else."

Directed by John Stockwell (Cat Run), the new Kickboxer follows Eric and Kurt Sloan (Alain Moussi), descendants of a well-known Venice, California-based family of martial artists. Kurt has always been in older brother, Eric's shadow, as he lacks the instincts needed to become a champion. But when Kurt witnesses the merciless murder of his brother at the hands of Muay Thai champion Tong Po (Dave Bautista), he vows revenge.

He trains with his brother's mentor, Xian Chow (Jean-Claude Van Damme), for a Muay Thai fight to the death with Tong Po. Chow first thinks Kurt impossible to train, but through a series of spiritual exercises and tests, Chow discovers that Kurt has a deeper strength that will carry him through his final showdown with Tong Po.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Returns to KICKBOXER as the Mentor

Jean-Claude-Van-Damme-Kickboxer-120114-Dragonlord.jpg

Jean-Claude Van Damme is returning to the world of Kickboxer, one of the movies that launched his action star career. The actor is in final negotiations to join the cast of Kickboxer, a franchise remake featuring Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista and X-Men: Days of Future Past actor Alain Moussi. John Stockwell is directing (Blue Crush, In the Blood).

This time, however, Van Damme is not the student but the master and is replacing Thai action star Tony Jaa, who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Kickboxer follows Kurt Sloan (Moussi), a talented martial artist who travels to Thailand where he must learn the secrets of the kickboxer to avenge his brother's death at the hands of Tong Po (Bautista).

Van Damme will play a new version of Master Chow, who teaches Sloan the art of the kick. (Dennis Chan played the part in the 1989 original.) UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, who played Batroc in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is also in the cast.

"We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation " said Ted Field of Radar Films, who is producing the movie with Dimitri Logothetis and Nick Celozzi. Logothetis and Jim McGrath wrote the script.

Scott Adkins and Tony Jaa Join Georges St-Pierre in KICKBOXER

Scott-Adkins-Tony-Jaa-Kickboxer-080514-Dragonlord.jpg

Martial artists Tony Jaa and Scott Adkins have joined the cast of Kickboxer, a 3D remake of the 1989 cult classic. They'll star opposite martial artist Alain Moussi, WWE hero Dave Bautista and UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who were previously announced. Moussi is playing the lead in the movie, which will feature more than 20 martial arts disciplines.

Producer Ted Field of Radar Pictures and Brian O'Shea's The Exchange announced the remake earlier this year. Field has been plotting the remake for more than a year, signing Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Fung to direct. Fung's credits include the wildly popular Chinese martial arts movies Tai Chi Zero (2012) and Tai Chi Hero (2012).

Kickboxer tells the story of David and Kurt Sloan, the descendants of a well-known Venice, Calif., fighting dynasty. When David wins the Karate World Championship, a promoter lures him to Hong Kong, despite his brother's protestations that the man is a crook. When Kurt travels to Thailand to meet his brother, he discovers he has died and seeks his revenge.

Georges-St-Pierre-Dave-Bautista-Dragonlord.jpg

WWE star Dave Bautista and UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre are stepping into the ring for Kickboxer. The 1989 film, directed by Mark DiSalle and considered a cult classic, starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and world kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio.

Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Fung directs the film. Fung's credits include the wildly popular Chinese martial arts movies Tai Chai Zero (2012) and Tai Chi Hero (2012). Kickboxer also has signed stuntman and martial artist Alain Moussi as its lead. Moussi has worked in a number of Hollywood event films, including Fox's upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. His past credits include Pacific Rim and White House Down.

"Alain is a star and will be an amazing leading man," said Field. "Like Vin [Diesel] in Riddick, Alain will make this movie very special, and this Kickboxer will be the start of an amazing franchise."

V FOR VENDETTA's James McTeigue to Direct BLOODSPORT Remake

James-McTeigue-Bloodsport-072413-Dragonlord.jpg

It appears as though the Bloodsport remake is finally moving forward. A few years ago, Salt director Philip Noyce became attached to helm a new iteration of the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme martial arts film, but movement on the pic has been nonexistent in the ensuing months.

Now Variety reports that the project has life, as Relativity Media has tapped The Raven and V for Vendetta helmer James McTeigue to direct Bloodsport with an eye towards starting production in Australia and Rio de Janeiro early next year. The original film took place in Hong Kong and found Van Damme's Army soldier going AWOL and fighting for his master's honor in a tournament.

Per Variety, this new story moves the action to South America, as it will "explore the life of 21st century mercenaries as they collide with the underground world of Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting." The existing script by Taken scribe Robert Mark Kamen will be rewritten by Craig Rosenberg under McTeigue's supervision.

Casting should get underway later this year, but given the success of The Raid, one imagines they don't need to fill this thing out with A-list stars as long as McTeigue can craft some inventive fight sequences.

KICKBOXER Remake Also in the Works; Stephen Fung to Direct

Stephen-Fung-Kickboxer-Remake-Dragonlord.jpg

More than two decades after Jean-Claude Van Damme split-kicked his way onto the scene, the legacy of the Muscles from Brussels is making a double impact on Hollywood's action game. Radar Pictures (The Last Samurai, Riddick) has a new vision for Van Damme's 1989 martial arts actioner Kickboxer, one of two Van Damme reboots in the works around town.

The original Bangkok-set pic from Kings Road Entertainment starred Van Damme as Westerner Kurt Sloane, a cornerman who trains in Muay Thai to avenge his brother's crippling at the hands of a brutal Thai kickboxing champ. Kickboxer arrived a year after Van Damme's breakthrough in Bloodsport sparking fan debate for decades over which pic is the better JCVD vehicle. (For its money Kickboxer boasted a memorable baddie in Tong Po, the villain who popped up in two of four subsequent sequels.)

Now Radar Pictures aims to reboot the franchise with Hong Kong director Stephen Fung at the helm. Fung's hot festival run at Venice and Toronto this year landed him representation with Paradigm after his Tai Chi Zero opened atop the Chinese box office. The actor-writer-director is a partner in Diversion Pictures with Hong Kong star Daniel Wu.

Jim McGrath and Dimitri Logothetis (Air America) will pen the Kickboxer script, with Logothetis producing alongside Ted Field and Nick Celozzi. Mike Weber and Peter Meyer will exec produce. Casting is underway now eyeing a fall or possible early 2014 start.

Fuck all these shitty remakes and reboots.

What did you expect of a (former) MMA-star? GSP starring in the remake of brokeback mountain? It's not like he's oscar material or worthy of much screentime in a summer blockbuster. He needs to work his way up in hollywood.

Would have preferred Bloodsport but this is a start.

Now they need to get Wanderlei Silva to play Tong Po.

Awesome, id love to see him as Frank Dux in Bloodsport next lol (im serious)

Just remake every JCVD movie and replace him with GSP xD

GSP as a Universal Soldier would be awesome, he has the robotic talk down :D

I'm depressed by the fact that instead of a cool 80s tune and the awesome score by Paul Hertzog, we'll get some gangsta hood rap and hip hop shit, maybe some emo music too.
