He knew if he fought a single contender then another title shot was out the window. He beats nobody in the top 10.

He is not scared of any particular opponent, he is scared of fighting a contender in general.
He knows there is a good chance if he fought one he would have lost his title shot.
If Leon wasn't champ he would be ducking him too.

It’s pretty obvious that Colby ducked the fight. Even if you listen to Colby, he carefully used the words “never had a contract in front of me” when asked about it.

I don’t really blame him, though. If you know you’re getting a free title shot, why would you fight a dangerous opponent? Doesn’t make sense when you know you have Dana WHITE Privilege.

At the time when everyone including Khamzat was calling Colby out

Colby was still trying to take his first few steps and attempting to talk after suffering the vicious assault on the streets from Masvidal and the Neik boys which left him in critical condition and on life support for a long time

Colby only just made a full recovery just before UFC 286 when he was chosen by the UFC to make weight as a backup fighter for the main event

Something that Khamzat could not do

As well Colby getting the next title shot was part of the deal when Mas settled with Colby out of court that Colby would receive a title shot upon his return

Its also why Mas is taking a fight against Burns to help pay for the settlement

The UFC possibly did not want the Colby vs Mas case going to trial which would have brought bad press to the UFC so they "assisted" Mas with this one

Why would Colby take a fight against someone who blatantly missed weight by 9 pounds, who ducked Nate Diaz and tanked an event

If anything Khamzat needs to prove he can make 170 again first

People really dont understand the concept of leverage in negotiations. They also dont understand that in prize fighting the entire fucking concept is to climb up the ladder to the belt. You have nothing to gain by taking risks with lesser opponents.


With that said, would like to see him fight khamzat. Not interested in seeing him win the belt from leon when he came up short both times against usman.
