Media Khamzat gets swarmed and ragdolled by a dagestani wrestler half his size, Is this how a potential Islam/Khamzat fight plays out?

i knew the guy was an actual wrestler. do people actually think islam makhachev is some master wrestler, he is a fighter....

People have a really hard time fathoming that the "aspects of MMA" are not the same as the other sports are. So if Merab outwrestles Cejudo in MMA, theres probably a lot of people who'd think Merab is a better freestyle wrestler. A lot of fans really do think Khamzat would run through the US Olympic trials in freestyle.

Correct, specialization. Of course the guys who SPECIFICALLY box or wrestle in their given form are going to be the best at doing those singular things. MMA is a mix, obviously as it literally says.

On top of this, specific sports have different rules that purposefully inhibit the usage of other methods. I didn't analyze that clip but was Khamzat going by actual freestyle rules where you cannot lock hands? I believe you can't lock hands in freestyle, and I'm sure there's something you cannot do in Greco-Roman. In boxing, obviously you can only use your hands to strike so there's no threat of being kicked or someone shooting a takedown, and I believe we've seen fighters try to lean too heavily into a boxing style to get exposed by what it's weak to in MMA.

Works in reverse too, Khabib rocked McGregor with an overhand right. If it was small-gloves kickboxing McGregor would have destroyed Khabib probably and that never happens. But the threat of the takedown which already nearly happened or did happen in the fight multiple times = opening for that right hand via deception.

Not to argue against the general spirit of your post, but you are actually allowed to lock your hands in Freestyle as much as you want (and also Greco for that matter). Locking hands is forbidden in collegiate (Folkstyle) wrestling only.

Khabib got taken down by Gleison Tibau. Not a good look. Imagine if he fought a fighter who was good with wrestling.....

Khabib and Islam both got taken down by Ali Bagov. Islam got his arm ripped off lmao. Khabib was also taken down once or twice by Abel Trujillo and theres no footage of Khabib vs Eldar Eldarov but he likely took Khabib down too. Islam was taken down by Egoyan too, whos a Sambo champ himself. These guys didnt fight a lot of good wrestlers but if they did, their careers would have looked different. I mean best wrestler Khabib faced was Tibau, best wrestler Islam faced was Arman and they both got taken down and Khabib arguably lost, Islam won a very close decisions vs a 22 year old that took the fight on 2-3 weeks notice in his UFC debut.
