Khabibs ground control is great but imagine if he had finishing ability. He always controls guys' legs and he'd be great at leg locks. It could add another dimension to his already amazing game.

I think he does fine punching them in the face over and over and over and over and over.

His knees are fucked enough as it is...

I always wondered how Palhares's leglock could be so many times better than 99% of other fighters.

With the 99% it usually results with the opponent shrugging their shoulders till it's released.
With Palhares you're absolutley f'd within 1 second and likely to never walk again.

I agree a fighter could always improve.

I do know he has some very good submission skill. Correct me if I'm wrong but he almost submitted Trujillo with an arm bar transitioned from a triangle choke. Time ran out at the first but it would've been a slick finish.

I don't disagree, but I wonder if he gets a kick (no pun) out of brutalizing his openents.

As if he doesn't get injured enough In training

he can finnish fighters.
first of all he wanted to go against barboza full 15 minutes because of losing ring rust better (he told that before that fight)
and barboza has a lot of heart and a lot of skill, barboza deserved to not get finnished.

Leg locks are risky submissions tho, could easily lose your position attempting one, and I don't think he wants that.

He's comfortable with just staying glued on you and punching you repeatedly until the round's over.

I think this is part of it, I don't think he'd risk giving up control

Hours. Palhares has elite jiu jitsu, he has competed at a high level and at one time had maybe the best system of leg locks around even on the competitive jiu jitsu scene. On top of that most fighters have no clue about leg locks especially in his era.

Palhares is a special needs kid. He isn't smart enough to teach anybody anything.
That may sound harsh but even Bustamante says this about him.

Leg locks are very risky because most of the time they do not work in MMA fights, yes I know you highlight Palhares but he is only 1 guy, there are lots of fighters that go for leg locks in UFC and they never get them, they end up losing the position or getting hit a lot.

One of the reasons most guys are not good with leg locks in MMA is because a lot of MMA gyms will not allow leg locks, because they can seriously injure someone and put you on the shelf for ages. I been to 2 MMA established gyms before and they both had leg locks banned, they don't allow it because it can pop your knee easily even if you don't mean to hurt someone and its only training.

Skill is obviously part of it but commitment is as well since you obviously risk giving up position.

With sambo I think its always a mistake to view every fighter as similar since really that sport is "MMA before MMA", a lot of sambo fighters actually have very different backgrounds, some were mostly boxers, some were mostly wrestlers, others judoka, etc. Khabib for example whist he's come though Judo does not have the same kind of background in it Fedor did with success at national level, theers some there definitely but mixed in with more wrestling.

No sane high level fighter is letting Palhares anywhere near them in training I suspect though, maybe Aoki?

Palhares actually uses luta livre. He explained before how BJJ was for rich kids and he couldn't afford a gi so he took up luta livre which does not use a gi.
