McGregor knew how to conduct his self promotion and new how to take what worked for the anti heroes that created the wrestling boom starting in the late 90s and apply it to MMA. Plus, at least before his fortune in the Mayweather fight, he genuinely did cement his legitimacy by fighting every time he was advertised, with no pulling out days before due to not being 100 %, and build his way up to a FW and LW title. Colby and Lee are a long, long way from achieving either one of those two things.

Colby’s a talented fighter and I get that he wants to amp up his trash talk game to get more attention, notoriety and money but the thing that will hold him back in that department for sure is a lack of charisma.

When you adopt the pro wrestling type heel character that Chael did or the brash, cocky trash talker that Conor conveys himself as, the illusion of authenticity is everything. Yes, yes Chael is probably just a nice dude in real life as other fighters have said, but I think back to that interview where he was talking about Wandy and PRIDE and the Nog brothers first touching down in the states. He was selling the bad blood and the trash talk. It felt legitimate even if it wasn’t.

Colby doesn’t sell it. He can wear the suits and say the words, but he seems like a guy who is really trying to play a part that doesn’t suit him. I recall him at the presser, sparring with Usman. He just did not seem comfortable or at ease. Usman, meanwhile, seemed convincing and serious.

I think it's not morals - but rather cultural. In some parts of the world instagram is like it's own religion. For all it's worth he needs a lot more girls and cars pics in order for him to be eligible to join.
