Calvin Kattar absolutely does not think Max Holloway is one to fake an injury.

Holloway was forced to withdraw from his trilogy bout against featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, which was originally slated for UFC 272 in March.

Chan Sung Jung stepped in to replace Holloway and will be challenging the champ in the main event of UFC 273 on April 9. After Volkanovski received a new opponent and date for his title defense, it was reported that Holloway (23-6 MMA, 19-6 UFC) will be fit and ready to step in as a backup, which caused Volkanovski (23-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC) to accuse him of not being injured in the first place.

However, Kattar (23-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) disagrees with that notion.

“I’m not reading too much into it,” Kattar told reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage at UFC 271. “As a fight fan, that would have been a good matchup, watching him and the champ (Volkanovski) go back at it, third time running it. Especially after the last two. But as far as what got him ready or what not, I’m not reading too far into that.

“I feel like to question Max, it’s kind of crazy. He took the Yair (Rodriguez) fight when he didn’t really even need to. He was kind of next in line for the champ anyway, but he took it. So the champ and Max, I think those guys are two guys that don’t really dodge anybody and want to fight the best guys in the world, so I got a lot of respect for them.”

Max Holloway would be one of the last people to fake an injury, just look at his strength of schedule.
The guy never ducks anyone.

Yair, Kattar, Volk 2x, Poirier 2x, McGregor, Garcia, Bermudez, Fili, Swanson, Oliveira, Stephens, Lamas, Pettis, Aldo 2x, Edgar and Ortega. Mind you most of these fighters were in their prime or close to it when Holloway fought them.

Max has a lot of mileage on him too, he's been fighting pro since he was 18 and got into the UFC at a very young age.
That's gonna lead to a lot of injuries.
 
When you miss a fight, citing injury — you get called out if you don’t provide details. In fact, you could still get called even if your do.

That’s just how it works…
 
Volkanovski really made an ass of himself with that accusation. Hope KZ sends him to the shadow realm.
 
That's what I was saying and why I thought it was kind of disappointing of Volk to chirp him over that. Max has fought everyone and has earned the benefit of the doubt.
 
Volk is frustrated that he had to prepare for a fight with one challenger, take a substitute, and then find out the first guy is actually ready to fight. Like most fans I'm more than willing to give Holloway the benefit of the doubt, but it's not that hard to see where Volk is coming from.

No way Volk believes Holloway faked an injury but he was given free ammunition and a free shot so he took it.
 
There's no way Volk is beating KZ, KZ is gonna touch Volk and flying knee him for a KO as he's going in for a panic wrestle.

It will always be like this since most are Max fans so they can't look at it objectively. Volk has his reasons for thinking the way he does. It doesn't make sense to him as a fighter. Fighters know more about injuries than fans do.

Either way only Max knows the real answer to this. People forget he didn't want the Volk fight and was trying to fight Conor instead and move up to 155. Dana put the Volk trilogy fight on the table, it wasn't the fight that Max wanted or was going after.
 
Volk was moreso upset about the idea of potentially having to prepare for KZ for months, only to have to face Max last minute as a replacement. He saw this as rightfully unfair, considering max is already prepping specifically for Volk.

This whole mess was caused by max, and now Volk is in a less advantageous position because of it. I understand why he'd be upset and slinging some shit. People love max, though, so it's hard to look at it from volk's perspective.

Max is not beating Volk. His best bet is to wait for someone to dethrone Volk and be champ again.
 
Pulling out due to injury and then trying to set yourself up as a replacement is still super sus
