Law Kansas: Welfare Money Is Not For Tattoo, Psychic, Casino, Lottery, Alcohol, Lingeries

It's simply putting welfare where it should have always been in the first place. Strictly welfare. Silly politicians just know that restricting the amount of "fun fun fun" people can have on welfare...means people will realize being on welfare sucks.

Nope. Its a meaningless gesture to perpetuate the idea that everyone who is poor is scum.

Just like the drug test on welfare recipients in Florida turned up that 98% of them were clean.

Who cares if you're not using welfare for those peripheral things it's a moot point

My parents were on welfare for a few years when I was a kid and then we rose above that

Too much concern about negative connotations

Sounds like Florida saved 2% on welfare spend

Some of this is obviously very petty; one of the banned expenditures is the public pool. That is just being mean because they can. Other than that, I find it almost impossible to argue for tattoos, casinos, liquor,

If this weren't Kansas, a right wing policy Petri dish, this wouldn't even be make a blip on the national radar.

I agree 100% with sodapop re: white collar crimes. Has Dodd-Frank even been fully implemented or are lobbyists still peeling it apart like an onion?

That's a good question. I don't even know, haven't kept up with it in awhile.

I had no idea spending welfare money on lingerie was this big a problem.

at the gov level when you are running a county and having to keep the population under control...Do what ever it takes to keep the lazy and non working with something,,,,back in rome, they would hand out bread and theater tickets as a form of welfare...When the money ran out, those people getting the hand outs got pissed and violent...

The only think to do after that and was a great and cheap alternative was to put the fear of god in the people which the Romans created the roman catholic church and in those days you did not piss off god

Imaging taking people off gov assistance...that cultures riots would be epic..

Cruise ships and Jewellery shops? Yeah right...

A few more categories they need to add to the things people aren't allowed to spend their welfare money on:
Supercars
Yachts
Butlers
Personal Assistants
Thoroughbred Racehorses
Gold plated lavatories
Personal Shoppers
Safaris

That'll fix any budget woes, and stop these criminal slackers living the high life, no doubt.

I'm torn. I think its insane for welfare to go to certain things, yet I can't get as worked up about this after the whole financial meltdown in 2008... If we cared as much about white collar financial crime as we did welfare recipients, the nation would be in a much better place. But alas, people are always going to look down the socioeconomic scale when it comes to these things because it's easier to understand.

Seriously, this...

Dumping on the poor to give a false sense of superiority to the middle class. This doesn't improve anything, it's just a big "fuck you" to people. Obviously many of the categories make intuitive sense to ban, but that doesn't mean banning them is worthwhile. Others are just simple pleasures, and there's something mean spirited about denying cheap enjoyment to people who are down on their luck, out of spite.

Neutral here.

It sends the message that the poor spending their welfare money on concerts, tattoos, psychics, and lingerie instead of necessities is an actual problem to begin with, thus perpetuating the great American culture of shitting on the poor and everyone being "one big break" away from being the next Steve Jobs.

Basically, it's meaningless platitudes to misdirect everyone from the fact that Kansas is turning into a raging dumpster fire.

It sends that message because that's exactly what a lot of poor people spend their money on. They spend it on stupid nonsense and not on stuff they need, because those needs will be met by the government

lol

Im a democrat and this doesnt sound horrible to me. Welfare should be for food and necessities

It's not like welfare isn't being spent on necessities; the law just makes it sound like the welfare system is being abused more than it is. I'd like to see some hard statistics from Kansas about what percentage of welfare actually goes to the banned items. It's just a ploy to turn the middle class against the lower class.

I dont see how it is a ploy this doesn't hurt anyone. We are complaining now for no reason because its apparently a ploy. Such a small issue this is. Id rather states have laws like this then not. Id like to see stats as well

I don't see a problem with this. Do people think it should be used for that stuff? We're told to support welfare because they're struggling to eat and provide good shelter. Not because they're bored.

lol @Psychics...poor people

I agree with this 100%. If you are poor and can't afford to pay your rent and buy groceries and I am supporting your sorry ass then you better not be spending the money I worked hard to earn on seeing hookers. If you are working hard and paying your taxes and you want to see escorts, be my guest.

Weird guns are not on the list.
I guess even poor people have the right to protect all the crap they don't have.:icon_chee

It will be fun to watch that state descend further and further into the zhithole.

Let them use the tax payers money for things like liquor and strip clubs, or they are gonna get upset about it?. We had better pander to them, hell throw in a free car too!, otherwise they might start smashing up bus stops and small businesses :icon_neut

You can be hard working, paying taxes and still require welfare assistance though.
