Kansas bill bans TANF recipients from spending at movies or pools

So you disagree with the law?

Holy crap.

No. I agree that TANF funds should be limited to necessary expenses. I've said this I don't know how many times.

I've also said if they have a job and extra cash that they are free to spend it how they please.

No idea what you're trying to say.

Of course it's an example of tyranny. It's the gov't telling certain people they can't go to a movie or go swimming. What's shocking to me is that the same people who think that every little thing the gov't does is tyranny are completely OK with this kind of thing. Really shows that all the talk about principle is just hot air for those people.

How much more absurd can you get? It's not telling anyone it can't go to the pool. It's telling them that they can't spend the money given to them for free on going to the pool

What is your take on a mother of 3 spending her family TANF benefits on the casino and tattoos?

He feels the mom should do as she pleases if she skips a few meals . . . or something.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, maybe you need to read the article again.

Anyone can go to the pool or movie. You just have to get a job and pay for it.
Tyranny is forcing the hard working people to finance the luxuries of people on welfare.

Do you really?

Local 7-11 stores here in OKC all have free ATMs. I'm sure other locations around the country do too.

Wow . . . So this is all about ATM fees now? Ha.

I think that was actually a good point. There are free ATM's but the majority of them, especially in poor neighborhoods, have exorbitant fees. Forcing people to increase trips to the ATM's in some of these neighborhoods is a pretty big cash transfer from the government to banks and ATM vendors.

No. It's really not. They can go swimming and they can go to the movies. This isn't nazi Germany or the Jim Crow south. These people are not barred from going to movies or swimming, they just cannot use their TANF card to bag for it, just as I cannot use my HSA card for comic books.

What is your take on a mother of 3 spending her family TANF benefits on the casino and tattoos?

His goal is to undermine a rational argument against government overreach by using poor logic in an attempt to frame a narrative by redefining the language. It's so obviously transparent though.

Stop trying to act like poor people are carrying the weight for the rest of the country.

But over the past 30 years that's exacty what happened

That's why we've seen the highest rates on inequality since before the Great Depression.

I know ur a right wing nut and facts won't matter to you but these are all stone cold facts.

They can't use cash to pay for it either. The whole point of cash benefits (as opposed to things like WIC) is that people have different needs and can benefit from freedom in how they spend their money.

I don't like it. Free people will make bad decisions sometimes. Does that justify taking people's freedom away? I guess if they're a member of a group that you hate.

So how are they supposed to distinguish between the cash that they get from the gov't and the cash that they get from other means?

Don't try to translate my posts through your inferior mind. If you want to tell someone else what I'm saying, just quote me.

Or do what OldGoat does. Use it as a debit card.

It really is, he's a truly magnificent troll.

There are 7-11s all over OKC's "poor" neighborhoods. Exorbitant fees on check cashing I could buy, but not ATM fees. There are plenty of no/low cost ATMs around for folks. Additionally, many stores will give cash back with a purchase at no charge.

It could be a valid concern in parts of Kansas City I guess . . .

Kansas is a shithole of right wing ideology and they are suffering for it. That doesn't mean it's reasonable for a parent to spend their TANF benefits at the casino, or on a tattoo while their kids are neglected. TANF isnt a bonus check, it's welfare for people who need a leg up. If people value a tattoo or a movie over putting food on the table or saving a little to move out of poverty then they obviously need some incentive.

I don't think there should be welfare to buy tattoos either but the problem is this is their money to begin with.

There has been a massive redistribution of wealth taking place in Kansas and it's from the bottom up. So the rich are actually stealing from the overwhelming majority of the state and creating abysmal job growth.

That's theft if I e ever seen it.

So how are they supposed to distinguish between the cash that they get from the gov't and the cash that they get from other means?

They aren't . . . every story covering the bill says as much. I don't think any of us have said anything about TANF money being indistinguishable from "regular" cash.

Which even leads to more questions about the faux outrage about this being signed.

The only part that can be enforced is the ATM limit and restrictions on using the card in various retail businesses.

Besides, if someone is going to spend it on something not necessity based I doubt they'll worry about an ATM fee.

Can't they get cash back at the market for no charge?

Yep. Pretty much every store I've ever used my debit card at has offered cash back at no charge.

Got it. Unemployed people on welfare are the ones that dump money into the economy. Makes total sense
