Based on the technical definition of the term Latin, yes, he is :). However, as someone mentioned earlier, the term Latino has a modern definition, which refers to only people from Latin America.

GSP's native language is a Latin language. That makes him more Latin than any American mutt, brown or not, that speaks only American.

Bunch of confused American ITT, as usual.

What's the truth? That he an American white mutt that thinks he s Hispanic? Never seen a whiter guy than Gaytchi.

Being raised in a culture doesm't mean you have to show it necessarily when you are grown. If his mom is hispanic and brought with her her hispanic culture in raising him, then he is correct in what he said. Of course he would also grow up in regular Murican culture because he lives there. So he might identify with both cultures, as he might be a product of both and he'd have all the reason to do so.

It was also a response to whether he identifies with his German heritage. So his answer wasn't meant to denounce his "whiteness".

How often does it happen that a kid born from a hispanic parent of brown skin and a white anglo saxon protestant/or german in this case turns out like gaethje? Is this a common occurrence?

Theres a ton of Mexicans that look like Gaethje and arent even half American like he is.

Mexicans are mixed blood and some have more European ancestry especially in Northern Mexico where alot of Spanish, and Germans settled. So there is some Mexicans that straight out look like white people.

In my family for example. I have cousins that are exactly like Gaethje. Blonde, white skin, light eyes, and also have some cousins that look more Native American too. I am more in the middle and have features from both white and Native American.

If he speaks Spanish like a gringo he is fake Hispanic period.

Okay, sure, mister cultural authority. Culture only means the language you speak, I guess.

Not at all. Culture is MORE than the language you speak. But it cannot be something you don't speak. Let that think in.

This is why outside of the USA you Americans are all ridiculed when you pretend to be anything else than American, because you guys all sound like plastic when speaking other languages.

My wife is Mexican and speaks less Spanish than I do, I’m white. Being raised Hispanic doesn’t mean everyone in your house is speaking Spanish and you’re eating rice and beans all day. In my wife’s case, both her parent’s speak fluent Spanish, but she was born and raised in the US, so why is a secondary language here first and foremost? I think being raised Hispanic is more adopting their culture and values, not necessarily language.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Gaethje doesn't have Hispanic ancestry. What I'm saying is I'm doubtful about his claim as being "raised Hispanic." These are two different things. One has to do with having the genes; the other has to do with growing up surrounded with and embraced a particular culture.

Language is not first and foremost, but it is one of the few important aspects that defines a culture.

Other than the language, food and music are the big parts of a culture. Arts is another important part of a culture.

So if someone cannot speak the language but can cook, play / dance traditional music, or create artwork from a particular culture then he/she was indeed raised in that culture.

Do you have an anthropological source for that?

Lol. buddeh, I am not American.

Wait, does being “raised Hispanic” mean you’re gang banging with the cholo homies all day?

When do you have time to train?

I suppose this was what Gaethje had in mind when he said "raised Hispanic." He probably hung out with the homies when he was in his youth. :D

Not only that but Brazilians aren’t considered Latino by Latinos in this country

Really? I suppose those Latinos who don't consider Brazilians to be Latinos are confused with the terms "Latinos" and "Hispanics."

Lol. buddeh, I am not American.

Why would I need a source? Go to any country in the world and ask them how they see an dude born and raised in the USA that doesn't speak their language but claim to belong?

They will laugh. Even the Irish who have the same language as Murrcans want nothing to do with plastic paddies.

Interesting. Very interesting. Also is black/African ancestry common in Mexican people? I know it is in other latin American countries. Also with mixed people like gaethje, in a country like the states, how hard is it to pass as white, if he wanted to do so?

Go to any country in the world and show them you have an extensive knowledge of and familiarity with their customs and culture, but don't speak their language perfectly and see if they treat you like the average foreigner.
