If McGregor fights Nate the way he fought Max, he could win a decision. He didn't over-exert himself. He got in and got out. He used his kicks to control distance, not to look for a highlight reel KO. I even think he could mix some quick takedowns in to disrupt Nate's timing. He's not totally inept on the ground. He controlled Holloway on the ground. Mounted him.

Most importantly though, in his post fight interviews after the Brimmage and Holloway fights, he was clear that he didn't plan how the fight would go, that he just took what was available. I think if he gets back to that and stops loading up, he can outpoint Diaz for at least three rounds.

I know Max Holloway is no Nate Diaz, but Conor had a clear speed advantage over Nate.

My money is still on Nate though.

Yeah 20 year old White Belt Holloway totally presents the same threat as Nate Diaz...

- it's a 5 round fight

- Diaz is a pressure fighter unlike Holloway who likes to sit back and counter

- Conors gas tank in a 5 round fight is a huge question mark at 170lbs

Conors gonna have to go in there guns blazing and hope he catches Nate with something early IMO.

Max ain't Nate though. Mentally or physically. Diaz gonna be giving him the finger and slapping him in the face for 25 minutes then. McGregors ego isn't capable of winning a Condit style point fight over a Diaz.

I'd point out that if you're not a strong grappler it's not a good idea to add takedowns to a dangerous grappler like Nate as seen in their first fight.

Conor didn't even "load up" that bad. He just fought a better boxer. Diaz would fuck Hollaway up too.

That is literally the worst strategy imaginable.

If you look at Conor's first fights in the UFC, his ego didn't effect his fighting style. Part of what I'm saying is that if he gets back to that, he absolutely can outpoint Nate. Of course, that's a big if and you're probably right.

LOL. People disregarding Max's skills. He has improved so much since.

locking up with nate is just going to drain your gas tank. conor isnt gsp or mendes. he cant just steam roll over you and get top control. clinching with nate is going to be a draining process and thats the last thing conor needs

yes if nate hands you a high % TD opportunity then taking it could be good but other than that conor needs to focus on dealing with nates reach and managing his cardio

I would never recommend rolling with Nate, but if Conor can just dump him on his ass when he over extends himself, without getting pulled in, it would help. There's a blueprint to beat Nate. If Conor can check his ego and stick to a gameplan, I could see him pulling it off.

lol no
going for takedowns would be stupid.. he already tried being a panic wrestler.. we all know how that went

Conor has nothing for Diaz on the ground. In the first round he had top control and couldn't do nothing with it.

He also isn't gonna outpoint Diaz. Diaz will turn it up in the second or third round just like in their previous fight. It's a nightmare match up for Conor. He just has to hope he can catch Diaz cleanly with one of those left hands.

Not knowing the difference between an offensive takedown and a desperation takedown when you're already drunk from punches is kind of stupid. I'm not saying take Nate down and control him. I'm saying mix in takedowns to score points.

I'm a Nate Diaz fan and I want Nate to win, but lets not pretend that Nate can stop takedowns or defend leg kicks.

That would be the main problem for Conor, his gas tank! This guy's been knocking everybody, he's only been past the second round ONCE, in his 22 MMA fights!

Forget about the opponent (And I'm not quoting Conor here).

Check his movement vs Holloway.

Now check his "movement" against Diaz.

LOL McGregor fans are really reaching
I'm a HUGE Nate Diaz fan. I want him to win. I think he will win. I literally jumped off the couch and was screaming in the faces of my Irish relatives when he won the first fight. This may come as a shock to your binary mind, but some people are fans of the sport and enjoy discussing possible strategies and techniques. Not everyone acts like a lawyer hired by their favorite fighter to defend them on the internet.

Exactly. He stood right in front of Diaz, loading up on strikes, and throwing low percentage/high energy techniques. He was trying to prove a point, not win a fight.

i'm telling you right now, he can't fight diaz the way he fought holloway if only because Diaz is a southpaw. Holloway, at the time, was a timid jabber who was locked in orthodox stance, so McGregor, being a southpaw, just shut down his lead hand and fought on a line and Holloway, being green as grass, couldn't do anything. Mcgregor can't stop Diaz's lead hand like he could any orthodox fighter, and it's a lot harder to stop someone of a common stance from advancing
