they look fun and interesting and all, but why am i going to risk having, say, a 200lb barbell plus my bodyweight smashed into the ground by my legs just for an excuse? fuck, i get shin splints just by running, these would be murder.

or am i totally wrong
 
I think they're intended to be more of a dynamic lift. I've not done them myself yet but I'd say halve or even quarter that load and focus on explosive bar speed and form.
 
well i just threw 200lbs out there because i didnt want to look like a pussy even though i am. i just dont see how that could be healthy at all to your legs. even the tremors from you bouncing on the fucking ground with 100 pounds on you runs up your spine. this is not good.
 
I'm weak as shit and a couple days ago I survived doing a some jump squats with a friend of mine sitting on my shoulders (he probably weighs around 115). Granted, this wasn't working out, more of a "I bet I could jump up and down with you on my shoulders" type situation, but still...

Start light and stop if they give you shin splints?
 
id do them if they'd be beneficial to me but i cant really see where i'd need to reach high heights. im already tall enough and my names not kobe bryant. i just dont see the sense in them. theres potential for injury in every exercise but jump squats just look stupid.
 
get a 75 pound weight vest, a heavybag over one shoulder, or dumbells. get an aerobic step, squat down , jump hard then step down...if you want to do this with a barbell, use a front squat.
no need to pile on the weight just yet.
 
ur suppose to use a weight thats 20% of ur bodyweight. so unless u weigh 1000 lbs u wont b usin 200.

I do these, but I lay the heavybag across both shoulders. I conditioning exercise I do it to have the bag laying in front of me, I grab it by the ends, hoist it up, overhead press, onto the shoulders, jumping squat, overhead press, curl, then back down. Do 10 of these.
 
i only do bw jump squats and jumping lunges. i dont like the idea of jumping with extra weight. i think powercleans or snatches are a safer way to improve explosive power for the lower body.
 
Maybe this is one of the only times a smith machine would come in handy.

Use weighted vests, ankle weights, wrist weights, backpack of weights and do em on a trampoline to save your knees.
 
smith machines should be converted into guillotines. the only good reason to use one.
 
i could really use a smith machine right now, i've just down alot laundry and my drying rack isn't big enough....
