Hey all, I was watching the Aoki/Melendez fight earlier and Aoki couldn't seem to even gain a dominant position. It seems the same way in the UFC. Why couldn't someone like Karo Parisyan have a lot of success against wrestlers?

It just seems like Judokas get beat up wrestlers. Why is this?

Thanks!

What wrestler has beat up Honda Housey?

'Takedown' Tate got her arm mangled.

Judo is a much more limited sport.

You grab the guys sleeves or collars and stand up right and try to toss him to his back. If it goes to the ground most people just don't try to do anything, but some will go for submissions which wrestling arguably lacks, or a slow pin.

Wrestling involves attacks that score a few points and many points. There is incentive for doing things other than trying to throw the opponent straight to his back. Also there are grips and tie ups that don't rely on grabbing a piece of clothing you won't be wearing in an MMA fight. Collegiate wrestling has much more sophisticated ground work than Judo because it is a major emphasis. The ref will not stand you up after 10 seconds and there are many ways to score.

Have you ever watched a full length judo match and a full length collegiate wrestling match? Try it and you will easily see why one is more effective for MMA.

Allow grabbing the back of the shorts or even bring back the jacket in MMA, and you'll see Judoka dominate. The fact is the ruleset ("no grabbing the clothes" and "shorts only") favors wrestling and disfavors Judo.

Also, aoki isnt as good at judo as melendez is at wrestling, and it was mma and not combat sambo

alot of judo throws require a gi to work effectively, theres plenty that work no gi as well.

aoki can't set up his takedowns because his stand up sucks and has no power. fedor was great at setting up his takedowns with strikes.

this thread is silly since the numbers of wrestlers in mma out number judoka's

a guy like sexyama is proof of how hard it is for a wrestler to takedown a judoka.

judo is a great base

Karo parysian scores takedowns in every fight he has. he only looks like crap now because his injuries and addiction to pain killers plus he's past his prime....

i dont see judokas getting beat up on the weekly by wrestlers. what a silly generalization.

wrestling, specially folky style translates much better to mma than judo, specially the new generation of judo guys that are being borned with the stupid rule about leg attacks.

wrestling is no gi, and folky has much more ground work than modern judo.

But, there are a few judokas who can still get around wrestlers, akiyama did good vs shields, but with the lack of the gi, all those beutiful throws and trips he performed meant squad, because he couldnt control, the lack of gi takes away the control part of the throw seems like....

Which is exactly why it's so amazing that he can even be as successful as he's been.

I dont think Judokas are very interested in MMA. In the US you can see that judo is not a big deal but around the world it is. In russia Judo guys are major stars that win millions of dollars if they get olympic medals. They get audi's. Teddy Riner is huge in paris. Billboards with his name.

How many elite russian wrestlers enter MMA? Not that many. I imagine a guy like Saitev who is one of the best freestyle wrestlers makes great money wrestling.

In the US you see a lot of wrestlers take MMA because they dont get paid to compete. And the ones that do dont get that much. I think Jordan Burroughs got 200,000 for a gold medal. I am pretty sure for most EE countries gold medalist get a million dollars +. And in those countries a million dollars is like 40 million in the US.

Judo is similar in most countries that have a strong Judo history. Judo is a sport that can pay the bills. Ryoko Tani (Tamura) is huge in japan and became a important politician after her career. And if I am not mistaken I think she worked while training Judo for Toyota. So she got a nice company paycheck.

I think like you wrestling is more MMA effective but the reason I think you see less Judokas in MMA is because not that many good guys are interested.

Where as in wrestling especially in the US I am sure almost all NCAA champs who dont go the olympic route want to be professional athletes and MMA offers that option.

But Judo is strong countries in Asia and Europe and can provide decent paycheck.

There's a reason why guys that can wrestle and submit people have been so dominant. I respect Judo, but its a shame that's its basically turned into to a takedown art. There's a decent chance I would do it if they allowed wrestling and leg locks like they used to. But obviously Judo needs more fighters to fairly represent it self against wrestling and BJJ. I am absolutely biased for wrestling and CACC but i do like and respect the other arts to a degree.
