What? Where did the UFC explain this excuse? That is false.
Jon Jones' new contract with the UFC was an amendment to his existing contract and Jones signed it in January by the deadline- 14th. The UFC explained that Jon Jones' had eight fights left on his contract, and they were all for light heavyweight bouts. So his new contract was an amendment for HW bouts.
Of course the jones and Cyril fight was announced after Ngannou left on the 14th because that is when they cut Ngannou and that is when they announced the Gane fight following UFC Vegas 67 (Jan. 14, 2023). It was on the same day. Dana white himself thought Ngannu would sign it by the deadline of the 14th but he did not and jones did.
Okay. That's a stretch, but okay. Jones would have gone from main event/PPV points to main event/PPV points between contracted fights as compensation anyways. I have never heard of the UFC doing divisional-specific deals before. Not that it is an impossibility, but I have never heard of the UFC doing those in... well... ever.
So what the fuck did the UFC do? Leveraging Jones's willingness to cave in his own negotiations for the free title shot to try to get Francis to re-sign with the UFC against his own best interests, and re-negotiate with Jon by telling him Francis was wiling to fight for less than Wilder money? At the exact same time, the UFC presented both with the same contract deadline ultimatums, and then blame the whole fiasco on Francis because Jon was a company man and caved? That's how the UFC went about releasing the real champ and installed their own champion? Clown show.
Again, I don't buy any of the bullshit either Dana or Jon try to explain away in this mess. Their word doesn't mean anything, the two of them have zero integrity combined. If taking either of them at their word helps you sleep at night, go ahead. Agree to disagree.
In the end, literally everyone got what they wanted. Everyone should be happy, happy joy, joy. Well, except for the MMA fans who just want to see the best fighters fight each other (thanks Dana!). And all those "Haha.. Ngannou screwed the PFL" haters, lmao.
Dana got his fake champ
Jon got his fake belt
Jon ducked another real threat to fight an easy opponent
Dana got the fighters who would fight cheap and under their terms and conditions
Francis bagged a sweet deal with the PFL
Francis made that sweet, sweet boxing money
Francis won another MMA HW title
