Media Jones enjoying some soccer

Jones is/was a great fighter but an athletic freak he is not

He's the least athletic from a team sport standpoint out of his 2 brothers, who made the NFL.

Theres no shame in being less athletic than NFL caliber defensive ends.

Like I said, soccer is a skill sport mainly. There is obviously an athleticism element to it but its not a sport of freaks like for instance American football is. Put Messi and Jon side by side and no way is Messi the A level athlete in that situation.

If Jones is hurt, Aspinall dodged another bullet…

He must have maxed out his “luck” skill.

My view is this; combat athletes are tough and skilled guys, but they’re usually not the most purely athletic. There are, of course, outliers but overall, they don’t rank among the most athletic, especially when compared to athletes in a number of other sports.

True athletic freaks tend to get noticed in childhood and are steered into sports with higher earning potential, ones where you’re not expected to get punched in the head.

Even with your Messi comparison, and I’m no soccer fan, pound for pound, factoring in agility and reflexes, he probably has an argument over Jon in athleticism. He’s not 6'4" with a 7-foot wingspan like Jon, but those are physical traits, not necessarily athletic ones.

A big part of it is the actual physical demands of the sport though, it isnt just about the money or the size of the talent pool. Fighting of all kinds is extremely demanding and leads to well rounded athleticism. Soccer requires solid speed and cardio but because it lacks physicality it has much lower strength and durability requirements than MMA. The training and gameplay doesnt mold the players into well rounded athletes who fulfil their athletic potential to the same extent guys who go into combat sports do. You can apply this to something like rugby as well, it pays like shit, has a fraction of the talent pool that soccer does and in several countries is directly competing with soccer for talent, but still has way more freaks in it because, unlike soccer, thats what the game needs.

Honestly I dont think Messi is anything special athletically even compared to guys his size like Mighty Mouse and Cejudo.
