Jon Jones, Title Defense History: The Age Gap

They were the best guys in the division and he beat them all.

It's not Jones' fault that the division is old but I definitely think there's something to it. The one fight that he had trouble in, the guy happened to the same age and have the same physical gifts that he had.

Anyone that thinks age isn't a factor is naive or delusional. A great 25 year old beats a great 35 year old all things being equal every single time.

True, but Jones also has the size, the reach and the athleticism.

It's a well know fact that Jones fights mostly past prime and mid-low tier fighters.

Bonnar:
Low tier
Machida: 1-3 in his last 4. Earned his shot by retiring old Couture. Past prime.
Shogun: Coming off a second knee reconstruction and layoff. Past prime.
Bader: Mid tier
Vera: Low tier
Rampage: Past prime
Evans: Good win
Matyushenko: Low tier
Hamil: Low tier. Lost by DQ
Belfort: Mid tier LHW at best. Lost 4/5 fights at LHW in Pride/UFC before Jones.
Teixeira: Decent win. Only had top wins over mid tier Ryan Bader and a past prime Rampage.
Gustafsson: Got his ass kicked. Close and controversial decision
Cormier: Good win
St. Preux: Ovince had 0 top wins. Lackluster performance by Jones, again against a guy he didn't dwarf.
Cormier: Good win

They were the best guys in the division and he beat them all.

34 year old middleweight Anderson Silva obliterated a 30 year old who was only 7 months removed from light heavyweight championship status, in one of the most talked about and dominant performances that MMA has ever seen. Maybe that division has always been overrated?

Then again, Silva is GOAT...

Calm down. Iz joke.

Ah, well on these boards, that joke flies as gospel truth, so one never knows.

For the record, I was only slightly activated.... not even in the neighbourhood of rustled.

For the holy record.

Forrest was pretty bad for a champion but yeah few in the world could have beaten Anderson that night.

I think the MMA prime is in the early 30's so I kinda feel like a lot of those are guys in their primes. Rampage would be the only early 30's guy who I would say was better in his 20's. And I think Cormier and Glover are two guys that have been in their primes even later than normal.

Don't forget eye pokes and masking agents!

Lol...

What kind of idiot do you have be to bash a record like that?

Were you an early 80s crack baby?

Uh-huh. Everyone vehemently predicted that Chael Sonnen, Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson, Vitor Belfort and Ovince St. Preux would start the fall of Jon Jones.

You've been on sherdog for one Jones fight.
Evans yes because he was 'Jones big brother' and with Sonnen it was he was in Jones' head.

So Jones has been destroying fighters with far more experience than him? Further cementation of GOAT status.

I think you misread my post...because you're agreeing with me.

Interesting point about age.

But guys like Bonnar, OSP, Gus are also big, tall and long guys.. 2 of them were so out-skilled it wasn't even funny but they survived till the end while Gus may have even won it.

On Fedor situation it's different, it's about will, evolution, comfort, size even can always be the smaller guy and not have any consequences in the long time, wear and tear.. and he stopped being hungry he was set for life the fire wasn't there any longer.

This thread reads like a support group for Jones haters.

Stay mad

This is true, but he was 23 and Shogun was 29 when he destroyed him. It also points out how good he was at such a young age. A lot of top fighters hadn't even began training or were just beginning at the age when Bones was tooling champs and former champs. He was fighting grown-ass men with a ton of experience. Two different ways of looking at it.

There are no absolutes when it comes to age in MMA. There are many factors to being washed up in mma than just age. DC and Glover were still great wins for Jones

That's what happens when you're the youngest UFC champ ever, you face older guys.
