Shogun:
Over hand on the neck. Many fighters have been dropped to the neck
Here the much smaller Shogun throws a left hook with beautiful timing as Jones steps in with a jab, then follows up with a right straight over Jones' jab.
Beautiful left hook - right straight combo by Shogun. (That was a gassed Shogun too)
Snaps Jones head to the side and has Jones backing up (he was in hot persuit). He prlly wasnt stunned...but the much smaller Shogun is able to back Jones off. He had the much larger Jones backing up after that right straight so that said something.
Its actually a pretty basic effective combo in boxing (especially when the 1-2 isnt getting through). Left hook to get peripheral vision focused on it (or to uncork a high guard) then sneak the right straight on through
Even though Shogun vs Jones mostly took place on the ground, Shogun still managed to land some good punches on the feet vs Jones. (Mind you once Shogun was already gassed and battered from ground and pound too.) That was only a couple of them highlighted.
Machida:
Here the much smaller Machida times a Jones kick beautifully with a beautiful counter left. ROCKS Jones badly. Jones almost goes down
Essentially Machida was planted and timing Jones' kicks with counters every time. Beautiful counter work/timing by Machida.
I also liked this of Machida catching the kick + countering with a right hook. Nice. Machida lands another right hook while Jones is off balance then a left while in persuit.
The much smaller Machida was putting a striking clinic on Jones in the 1st round.
Rashad:
Head kick rocks Jones. Dont know what Jones was doing with his hands or what he was thinking. But again Jones gets clobbered with his hands no where near in defensive positioning. The natural HW Jones gets rocked yet again by a smaller fighter.
Couple of solid clean right hands.
This is a trend you will see in most of Jones' major fights...countered over his lead hand when reaching (or jabbing) - as we also saw with the first Shogun gif.
Theres also another big over hand right that Rashad landed (the infamous one all over replays) that had Jones backing up, but I wont include it in order to make room for other gifs
In the next two posts we will highlight portions of Jones' fights against DC and Gus.
Its interesting how once Jones started fighting opponents who werent fading away past their peaks, or in Gustafsson's case - someone who was just as young and almost as tall, then we saw Jones struggling mightily
Now Jones was still getting tagged with big shots - and still getting rocked by the smaller older aging LHW names he was facing, but he still could end up controlling them...against DC - and especially against Gus, now we saw Jones not able to maintain control and instead fighting for every breath of his in serious life and death wars. That Gus fight alone took 20 years off Jones life and aged Jones considerably
