Shogun:

Over hand on the neck. Many fighters have been dropped to the neck

i5ozvc.gif

Here the much smaller Shogun throws a left hook with beautiful timing as Jones steps in with a jab, then follows up with a right straight over Jones' jab.

Beautiful left hook - right straight combo by Shogun. (That was a gassed Shogun too)

Snaps Jones head to the side and has Jones backing up (he was in hot persuit). He prlly wasnt stunned...but the much smaller Shogun is able to back Jones off. He had the much larger Jones backing up after that right straight so that said something.

Its actually a pretty basic effective combo in boxing (especially when the 1-2 isnt getting through). Left hook to get peripheral vision focused on it (or to uncork a high guard) then sneak the right straight on through

Even though Shogun vs Jones mostly took place on the ground, Shogun still managed to land some good punches on the feet vs Jones. (Mind you once Shogun was already gassed and battered from ground and pound too.) That was only a couple of them highlighted.

Machida:

Here the much smaller Machida times a Jones kick beautifully with a beautiful counter left. ROCKS Jones badly. Jones almost goes down

Essentially Machida was planted and timing Jones' kicks with counters every time. Beautiful counter work/timing by Machida.

24oylie.gif

I also liked this of Machida catching the kick + countering with a right hook. Nice. Machida lands another right hook while Jones is off balance then a left while in persuit.

The much smaller Machida was putting a striking clinic on Jones in the 1st round.

Rashad:
rashad-head-kicks-jones-o.gif

Head kick rocks Jones. Dont know what Jones was doing with his hands or what he was thinking. But again Jones gets clobbered with his hands no where near in defensive positioning. The natural HW Jones gets rocked yet again by a smaller fighter.

168ijk2.gif

Couple of solid clean right hands.

This is a trend you will see in most of Jones' major fights...countered over his lead hand when reaching (or jabbing) - as we also saw with the first Shogun gif.

Theres also another big over hand right that Rashad landed (the infamous one all over replays) that had Jones backing up, but I wont include it in order to make room for other gifs

In the next two posts we will highlight portions of Jones' fights against DC and Gus.

Its interesting how once Jones started fighting opponents who werent fading away past their peaks, or in Gustafsson's case - someone who was just as young and almost as tall, then we saw Jones struggling mightily

Now Jones was still getting tagged with big shots - and still getting rocked by the smaller older aging LHW names he was facing, but he still could end up controlling them...against DC - and especially against Gus, now we saw Jones not able to maintain control and instead fighting for every breath of his in serious life and death wars. That Gus fight alone took 20 years off Jones life and aged Jones considerably

DC:

Beautiful 1-2 by DC. Right straight lands as FLUSH as possible.

Just like with what we saw from Shogun's left hook-right straight combo, the basic effective boxing combos work too well against Jones

Again, Jones reaching. But pay attention. This one is nice. They are hand fighting. DC establishes control over Jones lead hand. As he is controlling Jones lead hand with his right hand, DC sneaks a left hook then comes over Jones lead hand with that over hand right. Beautiful boxing by DC

Watch how the leg kick swings Jones around out of his stance. Jones is not only stood still by the kick but left parrell to DC out of position thus allowing DC to start teaing off on Jones

Rushing Jones (or teeing off on Jones) only after first kicking him out of his stance seems to be a great gameplan

118dn6a.gif
Watch how DC swings around Jones to get into position to transition to a strike on the breakaway, while he pulls Jones head down...as Jones pulls his head back up, DC nails him with a clean as possible right straight.

14o505d.gif

This one is like a montage. Just watch out for when DC lands another super clean right straight some where in the middle of that gif (and lands clean many more times)

DC could not miss his right straights on Jones

People forget - or either choose to ignore how close that fight really was

Now its on to the mother of them all. The fight that legit exposed Jones to the moon and back. I will give you a hint. Hes the feared viking who many still consider the uncrowned champ of LHW

Yeah his boxing isn't very good. At all.

Final.

Gustafsson:
First off it was amazing to see Gus beat the literal dog piss out of Jones. Out struck him by such an absurd amount. The live telecast had Gus landing close to 200 strikes on Jones. Gus severely out boxed Jones. Lets highlight some of the beautiful work Gus did on Jones

Now lets get started: )
VJUfUdN.gif

As Jones tries to stiff arm Gus to the face to try and cause some kind of eye poke - to discourage Gus... Gus simply dips his head off the center line and shoots a counter jab.

Previously Jones was able to get away with this against shorter opponents with less reach. Gus didnt need to cover distance being almost as long. Gus could simply dip from his position and counter jab from the same range. You saw it numerous times in the fight. Beautiful legit boxing skill by Gus to shut down Jones "stiff arms" via slip and counter jab by Gus

10xwm4k.gif

As Gus is circling, Jones follows Gus. As Jones tries to step in with a poor jab, Gus counters with a left hook that misses, but then follows up with a 1-2. The right straight lands clean. Again, these basic effective boxing combos reek havoc on Jones

2po87j9.gif

Body jab to set up the right straight for Gus. Beautiful boxing skill by Gus. Thats actually one of Floyd's most used set ups. Body jab to right straight up top.

You will notice that was another theme when watching the fight. Gus establishing a body jab, Jones reaching low, then Gus following it up- up top.

vxmfko.gif

So what were we talking about earlier? Again Jones reaching. Gus goes low to the body with a jab (body jab) Jones reaches low, then Gus off the opening goes up top with the jab - the jab gets Jones to move his head right into the path of Gus' follow up right straight. Absolute beautiful boxing by Gus. Body jab to get Jones to reach, jab up top that moves Jones head into place, then right straight right on the kisser. Gus caps off with another jab. Again, slick boxing skill by Gus

alex-gustafsson-counters-jab-with-left-hook-gif.gif

Absolute sublime slip and counter hook by Gus. Again, Jones getting blasted while reaching/countered when jabbing

gustafsson-lands-a-beatiful-left-hook-on-jon-jones-gif.gif

Beautiful left hook by Jones

gustafsson-lands-spinning-elbow-on-jones-gif-1.gif

Gus even landed his own spinning elbow on Jones. If only someone would try an oblique kick gameplan vs Jones. Jones likely oblique kicks so much because he himself hates to get oblique kicked/is not well at dealing with them etc.

In all the fights listed, the fighters landed many more shots that I didnt highlight...and in Jones others fights that were not highlighted Jones has been hit clean many times as well. For example, even just recently OSP landed many big clean shots on Jones.

Jones gets hit every fight. Thats normal for him, but his chin cant keep bailing him out forever

From 23 to 28 Jones has taken considerable damage. Its bound to catch up to him soon. In fact statistics say that Jones is due.

Lastly, after watching his fights, and as any of the gifs showed, theres a common theme going on

-Jones continually getting countered over his lead hand/lead shoulder as he "jabs" or reaches...or drops low to defend the body (i.e the Gus fight where Gus' body jab work had Jones reaching low all night then eating follow ups to the head)

- Jones most vulnerable to rushes when pushed out of his stance, either via leg kicks or grappling manuvers (DC) - or on break away

-Easily counterable when leg kicking (Machida)

- You will literally see many times Jones hands out, chin up, and turning his head away once getting hit like a literal day one amature.

Truth is Jones has such god awful boxing and even worse boxing defense.

Now we can start to get a picture on why oblique kicks/kicks make up the large percentage of Jones offence. Jones doesnt want to fight in boxing range.

Not to go too off topic, this is why lateral movement is key vs Jones (as Gus showed)

-Circling so that you arent in direct line of his oblique kicks. Making Jones turn to you constantly doesnt allow Jones to get set.

With lateral movement you simply force Jones into the boxing range/boxing exchanges that he wants to avoid/has little skill in

The more you know: )

p.s this is why Gus will always be a bad match up for Jones. Lateral movement. Almost equal reach. TDD. Far superior boxing skill. Gus was robbed the 1st time and would likely beat Jones even more convincingly in a rematch

So as we draw near to the DC vs Jones rematch, the most important things to look out for will be this:

- IS DC utilising lateral movement

- IS DC utilising inside leg kicks and setting up the rushes

- IS DC utilsing body work to open up Jones up top

Etc

IF so DC will win quite easily

But IF DC tries to fight like last time, just biting down on his mouth piece and eating kicks and knees to the stomach on his way to closing the distance then we will see a repeat of the first fight - another super close fight that Jones barely edges out. DC however has the skills to truly blow Jones out if he has the right gameplan

One thing is always for certain however. Jones ALWAYS GETS HITS CLEAN with big shots. Nearly every fight Jones is getting tagged or rocked. Jones has massive striking flaws that have been exploited and will continue to be. Expect that. Expect Jones to get hit with big shots. It always happens. But Jones l' chin cant keep holding out forever. Jones getting KOd might come sooner then expected: )

p.s.s
Inside leg kick + step in over hand right ala Hendo vs Bisbing. Jones is vulnerable to that set up. We could very well see Jones get Bisbing'd by DC, which many people would love to see. Its for Jones the criminal to get humbled

Good breakdown but a TL;DR awaits

What's that you say? Jones gets hit with big shots in all his fights?

Testament to his chin.

I like it. Jones does get hit a lot. Most of any champ maybe (yes, I know DC has the belt)? Robbie gets hit as well. Luke Rockhold has horrible defense as well, that's why Bisping's combination punching did him in.

Your point. Most fighters get hit with far worse or have been KTFO in their careers. The most elusive fighters in DJ and Cruz both have taken incredibly hard shots.

When you fight the best in the world these things happen.

but can he take a big shot from rumble?

When you post only gifs of one person doing work then it's going to look closer than it is, 49-46 was the appropriate score.

So even when your able to hit one of the greatest fighters of all time, it barely phases him? You might be pointing out another amazing attribute of his, not weakness.

I agree and he hasn't been as dominant since his return. I feel his time is coming due, the next couple fights will tell us alot

And he still beat everyone in those gifs.

Throwing big shots at Jones isn't going to win you the fight.

Taking a controllable beating or being pregnant is the only way to beat Jones.

Another garbage thread from the ultimate Shogun/Conor nuthugger.

Every single fighter gets hit clean you fucking dunce.
