Jon Jones explains himself

He pretty much confirms he's retiring after this fight.

I hope Stipe wins, he actually sounds like he might at least give Tom a chance to become undisputed.

He isnt that old, but i doubt he sticks around fighting lower name HW's, Aspinall vs Jones would be absolutely sick.

To be fair, Jones is in a spot where any loss hurts his legacy more than whatever Aspinall or other HW's could add, Stipe has his share of loses already, whats one more KO to him.

Well, at least we know he's one and done. Folks now armed with 'facts' can now decide whether they care about this fight or not.

I tend to prefer watching careers and paths to a belt more than one-off fights. So comments like this - albeit refreshingly truthful - tend to push me away more than pull me in. But we'll see.

Retiring after Stipe pretty much confirmed. Honestly he doesn't even need the Stipe fight, his legacy is pretty much set. Hopefully Tom will defend his Interim and HW doesn't stop moving.

I mean Aspinall isn't going to change people's minds on Jones resume and he's shop worn.

Translation- "No way In hell I'm fighting a big, young, hungry, athletic generational talent like Aspinall who will put me to bed inside a round. That will be horrible for my legacy I won't shut up about.

I'm taking out arthritic old man Stipe who can barely walk without his cane. Calling myself the HW GOAT, then peacing out."

I think he'd consider coming back for Francis -- that's the lineal HW champ, it's the only thing he wouldn't have.

At this point Tom would do better to start marketing himself as the guy that scared Jones from the division/into retirement.

It's true anyway. Either he becomes the scary must watch guy that retired Jones without even having to fight him or he pisses Jon off so much that Jones does end up taking the fight.

If a fighter finds themselves in that situation, they've "stuck around too long". He's holding up the division at this point.

Unsure why he even wants the Stipe fight. It doesn't really do anything for him. Maybe one last payday? One last hurrah?

You're forgetting how insecure Jon is. He jumps into every twitter thread where any no name claims somebody other than him is the GOAT.

He is extremely invested in being seen as the best ever and he doesn't want it to even be a debate in the minds of fans.

In his mind beating the guy who the UFC markets as the HW GOAT does exactly that.

He's already the LHW GOAT. Other guys are GOATs of their own weightclass, other guys have gone up and won a 2nd belt like GSP.

What no GOAT candidate has done though is go up a weightclass and beat the best guy ever in that weightclass. That's what Stipe does for Jones. On paper (and ONLY on paper) he sets Jones apart from the other GOAT candidates.

Pretty much lol.
