Jon Jones jumped in as Francis left the Heavyweight division with no champion. The top 10 contenders would then have to deal with the former undisputed LHW champion, who Dana had signed to a new 8-fight HW contract. This was a new and exciting start for that division.

What happened since seems to have stalled this division, sadly, with no end in sight. Hopefully something soon brings excitement back for the UFC HW fans world-wide.

Jones wishes he was in Ngannou’s position right now. Unfortunately for Jon, he’s a follower and will do whatever his master Dana says. Dana has publicly disparaged Jon Jones for years but unlike Francis, Jon will stay put in the UFC because he’s not brave enough to leave.

The division is stalled as a direct consequence of the UFC's decisions. Pulling Stipe out of retirement for Jones' last fight before retiring (and not defending the belt against any real contenders) was going to stall the division even if Jones didn't screw it up. Any constraints the UFC had to not fuck up the sport for a short-term sales bump are gone now.

Outside of Bones nuthuggers who disregard his repeated drug violations and failure at being an ethical human being, nobody really gives the UFC HW division any credence after Francis left.

Jon was lucky Francis went to box, it would have been a very bad weekend in Vegas for Jon with Francis beating Jon so bad in front of his wife and kids and the broader MMA audience, they probably would have had to censor Jon being taken out on a stretcher.

The only excitement is in the MW division thanks to America's and the common man's hero, Sean Strickland.

Every thread I'm in, someone is posting about how well and truly the UFC shit the bed with Jones / Ngannou and how sweet it is that Ngannou is one of the most famous athletes in the world right now and (a big-money draw) while Jones is at home either nursing an injury or shooting up with PEDs before he fights a retired stipe then runs away.... and it's you. I have been loving the schadenfreude you've been providing over the past 48 hours.

Greedypotomus White took a gamble on the HW division, giving Juicehead another shot after innumerable fuck ups, especially in regards to how many times he's been stripped, and had bizarre behavior outside of the cage and in his shitshow of a life effect him even making it to the cage.

This time it wasn't his usual screw ups, but it definitely has made a mess of the championship match ups at HW again.

Ehh, Jones/Stipe was a one off thing, since Jon said he was going to relinquish the belt if he won. Pavlovich, Aspinall, Almeida, Gane, and to a lesser extent Blaydes are the future of the division.

That said, they need to get some more new fighters in there; I know it's been a struggle. Maybe cap the weight at 245 and avoid signing guys who are just fat.

His excitement has been uncensored & contagious, both in and out of the cage. Much Needed !

Man with a great job, former athlete, hard-working wife... I frickin' wish.

20 years later people will still talk about Jon Jones greatness but no one will remember Francis except in talks like ''Fury is so overrated, remember when he lost to the big black guy from UFC with no boxing experience? What was his name Nagumbo, Durango i don't remember.''
So Jones should thank to Dana for blessing him. Daddy Dana knows the best.

Lol

It shows how far the UFC has dropped in star power that they cling to a has-been like Jon Jones
Not only that, they continue to put out watered downed fight cards filled with mediocre fighters. How many shit cards did they have this year? It has to be a record.

Instead of being invested in many fighters like I use to be, I might have 4 fighters at best that truly peak my interests when they fight. And one of those fighters is boxing now. Speaking of boxing, Strickland could hold his own in boxing btw imo if ever given the opportunity.

Well said

This is hardly a new issue. HW was log jammed for YEARS between Cain/JDS/Bigfoot and then later by DC/Stipe/Ngannou. LW recycles the same contenders over and over again, WW is a never ending stream of rematches, FLW recently had a quadrilogy in a 3 year span FFS, and MW is the most barren wasteland of a division I have ever seen with guys who wouldn't be top 10 in a normal era being ranked top 3 for years.

Not to mention we already had to sit through the latter half of Jones' LHW title reign where he dialed it in against completely undeserving title challengers after completely clearing out the division but refusing to go up/getting repeatedly suspended for being a druggy.

Matchmaking in the UFC has become absolutely horrendous in the last decade to the point where fighters are content to sit out and do nothing because the "best vs the best all the time" mentality makes it way too risky to be active. This leads to the exact opposite of what the UFC advertises as we rarely see the top guys fight and we're instead subjected to embarrassingly bad cards and told to f ourselves if we don't like it.

As prize fighting is hardly a legitimate sport (see immediate rematches and title shots coming off of a loss as proof of this), it is extremely foolish that they did away with tune up fights which are an essential part of fighting as they 1) make potential stars look good, 2) make cards more exciting, and 3) build anticipation towards actual marquee fights.

The minute the UFC instituted a BS ranking system, we the audience were immediately doomed. The UFC is hell bent on having the brand itself be the attraction, not the fighters, so now we're supposed to get excited over "generic fighter ranked #13 vs generic fighter ranked #12" just because it's in the UFC... sorry, not buying it. Any fighter who somehow emerges from this self-defeating system with momentum immediately tries to leverage their way into more money/less fights so again, the audience is screwed because people you actually want to see fight are never around because the UFC has a monopoly and takes advantage of their fighters.

They could be making SO much more money if they didn't get lazy with their matchmaking relying on immediate rematches and the ranking system to slap together cards but sadly, they know that the die hard fans are going to watch anything they crap out because they love the sport so there is zero incentive for them to shell out more money or put in more effort. It is truly a sad state of affairs in modern day and it's legitimately depressing to see how far MMA has fallen.

But you know... "the sport has evolved" so much <Lmaoo> it's not like we're seeing more and more one dimensional fighters in the top 5 than ever before because college wrestlers can make more money with their degrees than getting their face smashed in for a few pennies from Venum so wrestling is no longer there to dominate o_O

TL/DR: The UFC has been a shell of itself for years. You should be used to it by now
