Which is his style of grappling? I was watching a video of his throws (below, I apologize for not knowing how to embed) and I thought they looked like no-gi judo throws a la Karo Parisyan and Chivichyan's school, but then I read somewhere they were greco-roman based?

Obviously he cross trains, but does anyone know his base, or what he is mainly using in his throws?

In case you can't recall his throws specifically, here's a HL video that shows pretty much all of them:

YouTube - Jon Jones HL

In the post-fight conference, Jones said something I found very interesting, something like:"I noted that Vera had bad JUDO defense".

One should notes he didn't use the term takedown, but judo. As if Vera was good dealing with greco TDs, but an easy target to the dynamics of judo.

Jon Jones is a folkstyle and greco-roman wrestler. He won a junior college folkstyle national title and was a greco roman all american in high school. Wrestling has every judo throw that can be done without a gi, so it is likely that Jones was just a wrestler who had a lot of throws in his repertoire. He has most likely added some additional wrinkles by training in judo as well, since he's been training mma for a few years now.

Most of the throws he uses are not Greco-Roman per say as he mostly attacks the legs by reaping or tripping in one form or another. That would be illegal in Greco.

However I'm sure he uses many of the principles of off-balancing/Balance or shifting the weight that he learned in Greco. That doesn't just go away.

Id be willing to bet that he has trained Judo at some point though, or he does now. You use what works.

He is a greco wrestler who watches youtube videos of Judo. When asked where he gets his takedowns he says from watching Judo on youtube. Im sure someone has the video.

"A lot of the moves I'm performing aren't actually Greco-Roman, they're judo," Jones said. "You can't use a trip in Greco-Roman. I don't have an official judo coach but I've been, it sounds weird, getting on the Internet and watching a lot of Judo moves. I take it seriously."

looks like the extent of his actual judo training is "getting on the Internet and watching a lot of Judo moves"

what a badass.

Wow, thats pretty crazy. :icon_lol:

But considering he's already a great wrestler and monster athlete, he's one of the few who could do that without any real training in the art.

Well, with a solid grappling background in wrestling, he can probably learn a lot simply by seeing things. His body already knows how to make all the motions and how to move another body around, he's just taking ideas from videos on a new combination and scenario for already honed body movements.

Yeah I think it's much more amazing that until recently he was learning striking from youtube, that is not nearly as related to wrestling as Judo is.

he said in an interview recently hes been trying to emulate Judo moves off of Youtube.

which is pretty impressive because he does it better in mma than guys who have done judo all their lives..

Maybe because the traditional judo guys coming in are lost without the gi? I think Jones has an advantage because he knows how to grip and maneuver a guy without a gi to yank on to.

Most Judo guys we see in mma are solid positional grapplers, but the only other one i can think of hitting a sick judo throw in MMA is Karo.

I think judoka are somewhat gimped coming in to MMA because nobody competes in a gi.

He already has the hard part down with his greco. He knows how to off balance without a Gi. He is such a crazy athlete he can probably pick things up by watching it once or twice

what have you been watching?

Fedor, Yoshida, Akiyama, Misaki, Dong, Sakurai, Lombard. there are judo guys performing sick judo throws in pretty much any weightclass

Jon Jones is one of the latest to incorporate more judo-ish techniques in his arsenal. Nate Diaz, GSP and several other people with no judo background are performing solid judo throws nowadays

Jones is a wrestler thru and thru. He is no more of a judoka than a judoka is a wrestler after watching youtube to learn GR gripping techs.

Cool tho that he openly gave such a nod to judo. Little bit of promo.:D
