Carpenter might be a more important and better overall filmmaker. He also wrote some of his better films and Fincher isn’t a writer at all.,,and I’ll take The Thing over any Fincher movie. I also don’t like Fincher’s reliance on CGI.

I was kinda hurt how much of Zodiac(my favorite Fincher movie) was CGI because I was originally so impressed with the sets. It’s weird that police procedural had so much CGI.

But after The Thing there is about 3-4 Fincher movies I would rank above the next Carpenter movie.

And a lot of Carpenter films(especially after the 80’s) have an underlying camp/cheapness to them that I don’t like. To many it’s part of his charm but I happen to think the Piper-David brawl in They Live was a total joke in a harmful way. Even though I like They Live overall.

But I’ll go with Fincher by a nose

Think you meant Precinct 13 bro.
The Fog, The thing, Prince of Darkness, have to vote Carpenter.

Yeah my bad. I like them both but don’t love them, voted Fincher due to Zodiac but Carpenter got a very good resume as well

That might have tipped the scales....

Don't want to be sent to the Hell where people are skinned alive.

The Thing and They Live are iconic and beat every movie in Fincher's body of work, even Fight Club
I totally agree The Thing (1982 version....theres actually 3 versions) is a brilliant movie, incredible special effects (REAL effects created by special artists, not CGI). The movie is legit scary to this day and gripping, taut action and character development.....descending into paranoia amongst the dwindling number of people left at the Ice station as they just don't know exactly who remains human. It's superbly crafted.

The Fog is different but also excellent. I've seen both movies countless times.

Halloween is a classic and I've also seen Assault on Precinct 13 maybe 3 times and They Live 2 or 3 times.

Seven is one of my favorite movies, fantastic casting. Fincher is a different style of director to Carpenter, he simply makes different style of films.

One little factoid is Carpenter writes and creates the music soundtrack to almost (or all??) his films. So he is multi-talented.

Based on the question i presumed i would pick Carpenter

Reading the movies presented in the OP the ones on the Fincher list seemed better overall

Fight Club is DF's best installment imo, and Halloween , EFNY and The Thing are all better than it
