Anyone remember the scenes of court in Beauty and the Beast, where the court in bloody medieval (or maybe slightly later) France had significant representation of people of color? Literally, a historical setting in which you’d never see that, and it was quite common? The librarian, the opera singer, and several others in a setting in which they would be lucky to be cleaning chamber pots, if they even existed. For diversity and inclusiveness, of course.
This is all good and fine, but when I see an on screen adaptation of Things Fall Apart, I’d better bloody well see a bunch of white, Asian, and Latin people portraying Igbo tribes people. Or hell, a good start would be have a bunch of lily white Wakandans in the upcoming Black Panther movie – maybe recast the Black Panther with a Native American actor – for inclusiveness. When this doesn’t happen, I’m expecting Boyega to start yapping about how there needs to be more diversity, but let’s be honest – he won’t. Diversity, unfortunately, means fewer white people. As long as it is anything but white people, it’s diverse enough. An all Asian cast, African cast, Indian cast? Just fine. A cast of a bunch of white English speaking actors? “We need more diversity!” Which leads one to the obvious conclusion that diversity itself isn’t the real value here...
