Media Joe Rogans thoughts on Mike Tyson joining MMA, Do you think he would have done well?

Of course. He was a once in a lifetime talent.

Also his peak would have been longer because there's only so much wild stuff you can do on 50k/50k contracts.

It's just hard to say, look at Manhoef. Some abilities are not only about training and dedication, there's a innate inclination for them. BJJ master Demian Maia trained a lot of boxing and still was horrible at it while Gilbert Burns trained it too and is a lot better at it. We can't say absolutely nothing about how would Tyson be at grappling/wrstling only at looking at his boxing abilities. He would surely score some vicious KOs and be a decent MMA fighter but to say he would dominate is far reached
Maia is not a good athlete. Tyson is a top caliber athlete. A guy with his body type would have no issues picking up wrestling and grappling defense.

You could just kinda take this question with any legendary boxer and the answer will really just come down to how well they adapt to other aspects of martial arts like grappling and kick boxing.

There is a particular fascination with Mike which I understand because of his cultural significance to the generation who are now the biggest combat sports audience, but its also a bit weird because he's not even like the consensus best Heeavyweight of his own era.

You could just as easily ask if Lennox or Holyfield had started out in MMA what it would have been like and the conversation is much the same.
I agree with you on most parts (and Im a huge Tyson fan) but I believe his style would’ve transitioned way better than a jabbing boxer type.

Honestly think Mike could still be the ufc hw champ today with a few months training takedown defense.

In all seriousness, he only started boxing at aged 13 and he was easily the most ferocious in the sport by aged 18-20

The guy is so explosive, stocky and with his low centre of gravity? He would take to grappling like a duck to water

If by some chance MMA was around when tyson was aged 22 and he trained in MMA full time? He'd be a fucking monster in 2 or 3 years

Mike is a sponge and I think he would learn wrestling very, very quickly

How long has Poatan been trianing MMA? I'm unsure??

Mike would do way better than him if he was in his prime and trained mma

The level of skill required to perform mma is something tyson could never dream of, and the evolution of the game is so fast

i think sandhagen can take him

Legends never die.

Tyson would walk through most divisions until age caught up with him.

Boxing isn't just throwing hands. It's cardio, timing, movement, game planning, thinking under pressure, adapting while dazed,
it all makes for a highly challenging structure to build.

Tyson was even unique within BOXING.

Imagine MMA, internet, proper coaching... scary.

Back then, he could've trained grappling a few years and become the greatest MMA fighter ever known.

Or, been James Toney.

This. Rogan seriously saying "good luck stopping the power double of Mike Tyson" and not being sarcastic says it all. What an insanely ridiculous and thoroughly CASUAL way of thinking. Shocking to hear from a guy who has trained extensively... no one has any idea whatsoever how he'd done if he trained grappling extensively. There is 0 reference point at all other than saying "well he had strength and speed in his prime"

Of course he would have, way lesser fighters have succeeded in MMA, you'd have to incredibly naive or biased against boxers to think he wouldn't succeed

God bless USADA.
Mike Tyson has revealed he used to use a fake penis in order to avoid failing drug tests during his heavyweight boxing career, relying on urine from family members to help him deliver clean samples.

Kind of silly to say he would be great, too many variables.

I love Mike but he lost ALL of his biggest fights.

Whos the other guy talking with Joe btww?

"He moves like a martial artist"

Yeah boxing is a martial art lol.

Tyson would be explosive, powerful, fast. Thats not enough in MMA, you need other things.

But as we know his undoing in boxing, would be his undoing in MMA.

He doesnt do well against those tough ass Holyfield types, the dudes that can take his shots and keep coming forward.

in his prime and with even a few years of training in TDD and ground game 101 and he would have wrecked any HW division the ufc ever had, and probably anywhere else as well. he was truly a freak while it lasted.

Even in some silly fantasy land where Tyson went into MMA as a kid, he wouldn't have done well.

He was naturally weak or atleast not physically strong. For boxing standards he had below average grappling strength, no leverage in the clinch and was easily pushed around.

Nothing in combat sports is tougher than the grind in MMA. The clinch fighting, the wrestling, all mixed with stikes & GnP. That takes heart, mental strength. Tyson never had it. He was a bully who could not handle that kind of adversity.

He would have done very well if he had an extremely easy strength of schedule, just like his boxing career.
