One of my favorite fighters in the height of my MMA fandom in the 00s who doesn't get much love is Joachim Hasnen.

Hell boy was the tits! He had a great MMA career and I believe would be much more well known had he come to the UFC, however I am glad he did not. He had a fun run in Dream that saw him defeat Shinya Aoki to win the Dream Lightweight tournament Finale and the Dream Lightweight championship via TKO in the 1st round (he lost to Eddie Alverez, but got the chance to replace Eddie when he got hurt and took advantage.) The fight with Aoki was the second fight in a very underrated trilogy with Aoki that started in.... PRIDE FC.

The first fight was a finish for Aoki by gogoplata and is one of my favorite submissions ever. I don't know how to make videos skip, but in if you skip to about 9:46 you see the set up and spectacular submission.

Aoki would go on the win the third match to win the trilogy via arm bar.

All that to be said I wanted to look at Joachims Pride FC career. He went 4-2 with his only other loss to Sakuri in the semi-finals of Pride Bushido 9 (his second fight of the night)

Other than those losses he defeated Masakazu Imanari, Yves Edwards, Luiz Azeredo(who defeated a young Anderson Silva), and Jason Ireland.

Joachim Hansen did satisfactory in Pride FC in my opinion.

To those who remember him well, how do you guys think that he did?

He was a fun fighter, I remember him and Bibiano being the two "what if"-type dudes at lighter weight classes (like Fedor at HW) who never competed in the UFC (to be fair, neither did Aoki, but his fights in Belator/Strikeforce kinda showed at least a glimpse).

Some of the best knees in the history of the sport, practically laser guided straight to the chin. Prime Hellboy was a treat to watch!

Thanks for those gifs.

Yeah his knees were incredible. I am surprised he doesn't get more love on Sherdog. Guy was so entertaining, and never drank the Kool-Aid and went to the UFC.

Joachim Hansen was a beast in his prime

BJ Penn's fans constantly bring up his win over pre-PRIDE Gomi, but they always forget to mention that the Fireball Kid was coming off a loss to Hellboy, his first loss ever, just 2 months before taking on Penn, while BJ had 8 months to recuperate after his draw with Caol Uno

It wasn't the most exciting fight ever because of Hansen's extremely cautious approach, and under modern unified rules it might look close, over even like a win for Gomi, but under Shooto rules the right man won.

Joachim wouldn't have other boring fights like that from what I recall, at the start he was heavily reliant on his BJJ to win bouts, but after a while he turned into a striker and became quite the HL machine...
He fought every top LW from his generation that wasn't locked in the UFC, and mostly did pretty damn good against them.

Toward the end of his career, in 2012/2013, Hansen would also make Sherdog happy by making a move to kickboxing, and had a couple bouts for "Shoot Boxing"

Sadly those bouts aren't on youtube anymore, I'd like to rewatch his bout against Suzuki Hiroaki, now that I'm more familiar with "General Killer" thanks to his muay thai bouts in ONE <JennieThumbsUp>and his MMA bouts in RIZIN <Selugi>

I don't remember if I ever watched his second fight, against Kenji Kanai, who isn't quite as impressive as Suzuki (and is much older)

Of course he's one of the fan favorites, but he got overlooked by not-quite-hard-core-fans (and all casuals) because he waaaaasn't quite the best. One of those perennial top 5 guys. I'm racking my brain for a good contemporary comparison. Maybe Jacare (totally different style of course, I just mean, he strung tons of great wins together, was a one-man highlight reel...but never quite got to the top).

Plus, half his heyday was just before TUF, so before the fanbase grew 10x. And he refused to come over.

But older fans know.

I always wondered what happened to him I remember he retired in 2016 after having a stroke but I haven’t heard anything about him since, I was there in new Jersey for his fight against Sergey Golyaev as a kid with my father. Always enjoyed watching him fight.

100%. Paul daley is one of my favorite fighters, also would be insane to see MVP in the UFC

I'm a big Daley guy myself, always been one of my favs. I'd love to see MVP in there as well, not a big fan of him like Daley but would be hyped for the match-ups. That and sherdog would be salty as fuck if MVP starched a few contenders in the UFC.

Loved watching him. He was a good fighter that has been lost in time to many.

Great post man! Thank you... Yeah that Gomi fight was a win. Your post made me think of the Uno fight and I just went back and watched it... holy shit what a knock out.

Go to 19:30 of the video below. Uno was working him on the ground... until he wasn't. Hansen gets back to his feet and ......BOOOOOOOM

The knee KO against Imanari was a thing of beauty.
The timing that went into that was something else sir.
