Jimmy Carter 1924–2024

Most honest US President in history. Here's a 48-second video of Bob Dylan talking about Jimmy Carter. RIP.

Even though I am a Canadian, Jimmy Carter actually means a tremendous amount to my family.

He was instrumental in implementing free and fair democratic elections in my parent's country of Guyana - through his help, the country had its first (fair) election in almost three decades that ultimately lead to the end of civil tensions between Afro and Indo Guyanese.

RIP Mr. Carter - you were a good man.
Is Carter the reason Guyana allowed Jonestown in 1977? Or did he do that after lol.

Good man.

Piss-poor President who's weakness invited international aggression which resulted in lost lives.

My folks had two kids at the beginning of Carter's term. The economy got so bad they couldn't afford a third, which which they planned.

Thankfully Carter was voted out, in disgrace, and by early 1983 the economy was recovering to the point my folks were confident they could afford a third kid.
I was born October 1983.
Due to Carter's incompetence with the economy I almost was never born.
So fuck him.

I remember him when I was a kid. My mom blasting down the highway to the beach in her 1972 Malibu with Rod Stewart blasting. Me standing next to her to see over the dash lol. My little brother sleeping in the backseat. The radio comes on and it was a Jimmy Carter speech about an Oil crisis (I didn't know that at the time--but my mom lamented about long lines for gas). Maybe 1979

don't know if he had anything to do with Guyana. The story I always heard was that Jones was planning on building a commune there but expedited his plans when an article told the true story about what was going on behind the scenes. Then, a congressman decided to go down there to investigate at the behest of the cult's family members. All seemed to be going well until members started passing notes asking for help to escape and then more and more people wanted to leave. Leo Ryan was then stabbed and it went quickly downhill from there. I don't think Carter had anything to do with it.

Of course there are actually conspiracy theories that say guyana was a CIA experiment and that Jones was an agent.

I agree.

He was overall, a good person and humanitarian. Also, I think he honestly loved his country.

With that said, his fingerprints are on lots of problems to this day. Being a naive idealist actually caused just as much damage as bad intentions. Made worse, he thought his first decision was the best decision, and hardly sought advice from his cabinet or advisors. Case in point, was when he abandoned The Shah in favor of Ayatollah Khomeini (whom he thought was a "better" person).
