Well, he got a rematch — even though he shouldn't have —, so I can't really blame him.
Jimmie Rivera made his Submission Radio debut this week to talk about a bunch of stuff
Some of the topics covered:
- Upcoming fight against Marlon Moraes
- Their interaction at the UFC presser
- Marlon's accusations of him ducking/turning down fights
- His dislike for Marlon's manager
- Sparring Marlon in the past and if he took anything away from it
- If he feels this fight should be a title eliminator
- The frustratingly slow pace of his career since the Faber win
- TJ vs. Cody 2 being made
- If he's relieved that TJ didn't end up fighting DJ and holding up the division
- Cody ducking him
- His school in New York (video tour)
- His honeymoon
Some quote highlights:
If Jimmie is happy that TJ vs. Cody is going down rather than a fight with Demetrious Johnson
“Yeah, I’m definitely happy about that because it would have postponed the division a little bit more too. But I’m definitely happy for that. I probably assumed that if they were to end up fighting there’d probably have been an interim belt somewhere along the line, just because you’re putting the division on the postponed, so we need to keep it going. But I am happy. I know people wanted to see the fight. I actually wanted to see the fight too as well, but I’m also happy to keep my division going too.”
On Cody saying he’d give TJ an immediate rematch if he won
“I know Cody was saying, ‘oh, maybe we’ll do another fight with TJ or fight Cruz. I just think he’s trying to duck me. I’ve sent plenty of stuff on social media and he won’t say one thing back. So, I just think he doesn’t want a hard fight, he wants an easy fight. He wants people that he thinks he can beat or that he knows he could beat, not guys that he doesn’t think he could beat.”
“I think it really has to go on how the match goes down. If TJ wins there is to be no rematch obviously. It all depends on how the fight goes.”
Why he thinks Cody Garbrandt is ducking him
“Honestly, I believe I’m a tough guy to fight. I think at the end of the day, he’s got experience with TJ, training so much with him and sparring with him, that he believes he could beat him. He says the last fight, he talks about the last fight every time how if he had 10, 20 more seconds how he would have finished TJ. But TJ came back in that second round and finished him. And he’s already fought Cruz, and he beat Cruz really well and outboxed him, and I think he’s just looking for those fights that will be easy for him, that he knows he can win.”
TJ is ultra aggressive. Cruz used that against him perfectly. TJ was missing left and right and Cruz was landing clean counters.Something about Jimmie Riviera makes me think he can beat Garbrandt and Dillashaw without doing anything too fancy but just staying technical. It doesnt seem like he's ever really out of position, he keeps his hands up , good footwork, he's tough to take down.
its like he has the ability to take all of the top 10 to a decision in close fights.
Oddly enough- I favor Riviera over Cruz and Garbrandt but I think TJ beats him.
But I also think Cody beats TJ in the rematch. And Cruz is a tough rematch for TJ
