On the Bruce Pritchard podcast he talks about how they had a second set of drs confirm his injury and that surgery was necessary. The rest is probably true. Shawn could have returned sooner but he was being payed either way so why bother. He probably also had legitimate apprehension of a comeback after back surgery.

Cornette's timeline is off. Shawn signed a 5 year contract in the summer of 96. He was supposed to be involved in the HHH/Taker match at WM17 but was still fucked up on pills and got fired after passing out in Vince's office (the Doink story from Jericho's second book).

So I don't doubt the story. Not saying the injury was completely fake, but I can imagine it being embellished by Shawn while he was getting paid to sit at home and do nothing. The timing of the comeback is pretty... convenient.
