Jennifer Maia beat Roxanne Modaferri last weekend because of the three pound differential. Roxy tweeted she's fought against 5 opponents who missed weight and lost 4 of those matches. Roxy hasn't lost to any fighter who made weight since 2016. Weight differential by even a few pounds is huge in MMA, especially against ground specialists.

Jennifer Maia cheated. Jennifer Maia is a liar. I hate the purse penalty. There should be a point deducted. Totally disappointing to those who wait months and months to see their favorite fighter get taken advantage of. (Yeah right any UFC fighter is going to turn down the fight). Bullshit. B u l l s h i t.

Agreed, the penalty for missing weight should be stiff enough to make fighters think twice about huge cuts, and eliminate the advantage they get by coming in heavy. Right now I see it kind of like Jon Jones eye pokes, the penalty compared to the advantage is not nearly enough to deter it.

Roxanne Modaferri is your favorite fighter?

LOLwut, why make a post about a fight noone cares about?

Roxanne's Dad or boyfriend confirmed.

Good, can't stand Roxannes lanklet banging and frail frame clinch work.

Nice to see a striker use physicality to keep the fight in their space as opposed to just getting overwhelmed by spastic mummy clinching

If a fighter refuses to fight an opponent who misses weight, I will praise them.

The same maia who tested positive for a duiretic a few months ago.

Go figure..

Roxy is have turned down the fight tbh, but then you get the leslie smith treatment

All weight cutting is cheating. Well, huge cuts, not a few lbs if youre an in betweener. Shut the fuck up, its fighting.

Yup. Most fighters would rather go thru with the bout. And they get a percentage of the opponents purse. I imagine the idea of extra pay persuades them to fight on.
But should they lose, that's half their pay gone if they're on the show/win system.

They'd be out of that win money if they refuse to fight, and they'd avoid an L on their record. But they usually opt to take the bout in the hopes they win for maximum profit.

But I'm sure some have regretted going thru with the fight after losing to a bigger foe when they look back on it

The most profitable route is to fight, win, and take the forfeited percentage as well. I'd imagine that it's just too hard for most fighters to turn those possible earnings down

if you missed weight, your next fight should be in weight class above, no matter what was reason behind missing weight. how simple is that?

Modeferri sucks though. She would've lost even if they both made weight.

I respect your passion. (and also agree)

Thank you, I think fighters look for reasons why they lost, which is totally normal. Most likely you just lost on the night bc that's the way it goes more than any marginal disadvantages factored in.

The issue is when the fan base latches on to a narrative, it becomes part of the general discourse. Then it's parroted enough that it starts to be a go to rationale for fighters, coaches, and commentators to chalk a loss up to.

We were always taught to blame ourselves if we lost, bc that outlook allows you to take agency regarding your development and you improve.
If you're too comfortable with blaming the loss on external factors, you're essentially stunting your own growth by blaming things you couldn't change.
