Japanese Cinema Recommendations

Nope but I'll look it up.

Just looked up the term but I'm mostly looking for the best films to round out my collection. If you have any specific movie to recommend I'll check it out.
Fun and easy...

Basic staple of pinku eiga, amoral as fuck...

Bohachi Bushido: Code of the Forgotten Eight

The Naked Seven aka Sengoku Rock Female Warriors

Be warned besides the first one there is some nasty stuff in these movies, read up on what pinku eiga is before jumping in.

I'll see if I can find these streaming or on cheap dvds. It doesn't sound like these are the types of movies I'm collecting but now you've piqued my interest.

No, you guys have given me a lot to research, I basically started out as just a Kurosawa fan. From my list you can see I've mostly picked up the more well known samurai period movies and I've recently started watching the Ghibli animations but there's still a lot out there I'm completely unaware about.
In that case, no point in offering up Noriko's Dinner Table if you haven't seen Suicide Club, NDT being the sequel/prequel/parallel story. Suicide Club is a decently well known film, but the sequel adds all kinds of layers to the narrative, doesn't get near as much love. Honestly, anything by director Sion Sono is worth a watch. He's really made a name for himself over the last 25 years or so.

Conversely to yourself, I only recently started sitting down and watching Kurosawa (though I did watch Yojimbo many years ago, now). I came up on kaiju and anime, my love for Japanese cinema grew organically out of that.

How about Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter and Zatoichi series?

Are they good?

If you want a visceral, action packed, antihero film?

You cannot go wrong with

The Streetfighter

Return of Streetfighter

Sister Streetfighter

The Streetfighter's Last Revenge. Bear in mind that this was the 70's and some of the effects are REALLY dated, but the story/action holds up.

I CANNOT recommend the Zatoichi series enough. The remake with Takeshi Kitano is good in its own right too.

The Lone Wolf And Cub series is a staple.

Sion Sono is not for anyone. It is fun weird but not for the average consumer.

I really like the movie Brother with Takeshi Kitano and Omar Epps, not sure if that's considered English or Japanese because its a mix of both. Great fun little gangster flick with some cool ass characters.

I watched a bunch of other Takeshi Kitano movies but found a lot of them too artsy. Reminded me I absolutely loved this one and need to rewatch it.
