Yes and yes, but still an excellent film. The last Japanese film I watched was Cold Fish.
It was an excessively depressing and violent film...

Wasn't Hidden Fortress the inspiration for Star Wars? This is for all the best Japanese movies in general. I just read Tarantino mention Battle Royale so I'm thinking of buying it, these are all the Japanese movies I currently have on disc, what greats am I missing?

If you like movies from that era they are good. Zatoichi can get a bit repetitive with similar movies. How about Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter and Zatoichi series?
Are they good?
I think so, it's one of my favorites, waiting for my daughter to be old enough to watch it with her.Wasn't Hidden Fortress the inspiration for Star Wars?
Criterion has the collection of the original Zatoichi films but some are better than others. At one point I started buying digital and have a later remake that I thought was pretty good. Here are some Japanese movies I have on digital that I didn't include in my list. How about Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter and Zatoichi series?

I just noticed I had that one on my watch list when I was buying digital.Twilight Samurai (2002) is a good watch. It has Hiroyuki Sanada as a low ranking samurai as the era of samurai is ending.

With Street Fighter if you hate borderline bad guy / bad guy potags you might not like it.
Damn, G. I prefer Shin Godzilla to Minus One. I saw it a few months ago at the theater and it was so liveTried to watch Shin Godzilla but had to turn it off after a few minutes since I didn't like the frantic herky jerky way they presented the story with the short clips and unusual zoom aways. It was also one of those movies/shows that didn't really immediately hook you in.
It must feel weird to watch the fighting after experiencing post Raid fight choreography but it came out of the era of John Wayne just tossing dudes and Captain Kirk jumping forward and kicking with both feet era of motion picture fighting. If i recall the fighting felt less like dancing compared to Shaw Bros.As for Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter films, those are legitimately terrible movies, but they're fun. Bad writing, bad acting. B-movie fare all the way. Chiba is also so cartoonishly over-the-top with his terrible martial arts that it feels at times like he thinks he's in a Kung Pow!-esque spoof and no one told him that they were actually trying to make straight dramatic actioners. But they're iconic and The Street Fighter especially is worth seeing for its twist on the Hong Kong kung fu movie.
You want some weird horror? This is for all the best Japanese movies in general. I just read Tarantino mention Battle Royale so I'm thinking of buying it, these are all the Japanese movies I currently have on disc, what greats am I missing?

No, you guys have given me a lot to research, I basically started out as just a Kurosawa fan. From my list you can see I've mostly picked up the more well known samurai period movies and I've recently started watching the Ghibli animations but there's still a lot out there I'm completely unaware about.I'm just listing stuff without concern as to whether or not you've watched, based on your OP you're probably already well versed enough that you've seen most everything most would recommend. I appreciate that, though. Japan's movie industry is one of the best, they make good stuff.
Unagi (1998)
Marebito (2004)
Noroi (2005)
Noriko's Dinner Table (2005)
Hazard (2005)
The Land of Hope (2012)
Blues Harp (1998)
Sonatine (1993)
Outrage (2010)
Beyond Outrage (2012)
Outrage Coda (2017)
Ghost in the Shell
Godzilla vs Biollante (1989) (This is legitimately the GOAT. Of everything, ever.)
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)
Perfect Blue (1997)
I am just going to call it there, else this could go on for hours, and Like a Dragon: Ishin is calling me
