Media Japan leads the world in wrestling gold medals. How will this affect MMA?

Thought the same thing. War Japan!

How'd they do in judo? Also, there is consistently serious kickboxing and boxing talent coming out of Japan.

We will probably never see a rekindling of the absolute golden age of pride events in the super arena, but I can hope.

good for japan but again this olympics sucked bad, no russia in wrestling just cause of politics, too much hypocrisy

Not long ago they sent Sweden into the b-leagues in ice hockey!
Well the ladies that is. And to be fair we don't pay those ladies enough to make it a full time job.
Shameful of us really.

Were Dagestani wrestlers featured in the Olympics or were they excluded because of the Russia ban ?

Interesting that there aren't more Japanese fighters in the UFC.

Can Japan become the new Dagestan of MMA??

The story here is not that Japan won the most gold medals. They've always been great in wrestling... The story is the fact that Russia didn't even participate and the US failed to win even ONE gold medal...
Really disappointing showing by the US, who until this tournament, had really narrowed the gap between Russia and themselves. They should have feasted and instead, they shit the bed.

There were a few that wrestled for other countries, but their best guys (Sadulaev, Uguev, Sidakov, etc) were banned.

Many Russian wrestlers (Dagestani and otherwise) competed for other countries, and won plenty of medals too.

I mean, how do you think Bahrain (lol) and Greece (lol) got their wrestling medals this time around? Imported talent.

Japan did the best in wrestling in the olympics, pretty crazy stuff.

Unfortunately for US MMA, it means jack shit. The amount of gold medalists, they can retire or do whatever for the rest of their lives, they are set. It's the people who didn't place as good, who I think could possibly do MMA. But they would be doing it in Japan anyways. Rizin will undoubtedly sign up any Japanese olympic wrestlers, that is easy money/tickets. So it will help JMMA slightly, but mainstream MMA? nah.

They will sign for RIZIN who will pay them what they're worth and make them look like gods in their promos

...and then (going by the past form of RIZIN/PRIDE), match them against tough 30+ fight veterans on their debuts and Sakakibara will say 'I was disappointed that an Olympian could not perform better' when they lose :(
