Should have been fight of the century levels of hype

Should have delivered fight of the century levels of talent

Should have made both of them the two biggest stars in boxing, in the primes

Two middleweights capable of being title threats all the way to heavyweight

Probably the best pound for pound matchup in my lifetime so far. On paper at least

Both 25/26 years old at the time of this fight...

In reality it was a shitshow with 2 unmotivated, burnt out kids who were here too soon.

Most disappointing fight ever.

I just watched this again and every time it gets more disappointing....this should have been the beginning of something borderline historically unprecedented but it was another snoozey boxing clinic from RJJ.

Just felt compelled to vent frustrations....we might have missed out on the greatest p4p trilogy/rivalry ever. Could have chased eachother to heavyweight...

Roy was just that good. @mozfonky on the forum talked about how Toney was a two step fighter, and how Roy was able to exploit that to a point Toney looked foolish. It was an interesting post, and I don't think much would have come from rematches, even at higher weights, because Roy was always going to have the right advantages to beat Toney. Fight was like Floyd vs Pac. The lead up was better than the fight itself.

It didn't help that Toney also decided to give up on maintaining any decent amount of weight in between fights. I don't think he would've won but it might've been a little more entertaining

He was supposed to break down RJJ and was a pretty heavy favorite, right? Master class by RJJ. I love the fight.

I'm not sure tbh....but I would have assumed RJJ would be heavily favored

But then again it's 25 years later....hindsight is always different than what was in the moment

I can picture Toney being favored because at that point Toney probably had the better record of the two as far as strength of opposition.

This was a coming out party for Roy, it just was against an opponent that stylistically could have provided a much more entertaining fight.

The story of Roy's career....his brilliance overshadowed by opponents who didn't deliver. @borntoloseNOT said it, Roy was just that good

Ive been watching Toney fights in order

And as far as i can tell, this is the first time his weight was becoming a topic

The Dave Tiberi fight was the warning shot.

I think this fight is really a testament to Roy's ability to stick to the gameplan. In a big fight like this it took a lot for him to use his feet and not get greedy once he started landing. I think Roy would have beaten him similarly even if Toney was on weight.

I talked about this fight in my terribly narrated youtube video:

This isn't bad at all man, I'm 9 minutes in and it seemed like 90 seconds.

You kind of sound like The NBA Storyteller

You could actually probably get yourself a little following if you put out consistent content, this is not bad at all....

If it completely goes to shit in the next 15 minutes then I'll let you know haha....but so far this is far from terrible

Thanks a lot. I'm working on the next stuff so it's coming but it is a side hobby, all you can do is chip away at it.

I made that one. Unless you're saying the guy who sang that song is on the boards, which would be really funny.

Toney was the favourite in this fight, he was proven at the weight and Jones i believe was having his first fight at the new weight.

The big question was "can Roy Jones handle the craft and power of James Toney", it turned into a resounding yes very early on in the fight when it was that noy only was Toney completely out of shape, he was also way too slow to catch Jones, who fought a strategic and safety first fight.

Great performance from Jones

Toney was favored 6-5 according to boxrec.

I laughed so hard at that bit, and really enjoyed the analysis. Good stuff brother, keep posting your vids here

Toney is a very smart fighter, unfortunately he was smart enough to know he couldn't beat Roy.... so he didn't really try.

A rematch at HW would have been amazing. People remember Jones becoming HW champion but Toney proved himself to be the more accomplished fighter in the division in my opinion.

Toney was severely weight drained for that fight, apparently he cut like 31lbs the day of the weigh in because he got too heavy in camp.

The red flags about his weight were there from a young age

I think it would've been a vastly different fight if that was the same Toney that fought McCallum
Not Roy's fault he couldn't handle weight cut right. Toney in a rematch, top form is impossible hypothetical because Toney never showed up in top form. Never a disciplined guy, it was a mindset with him. People talk about what could have been when it comes to Toney for a reason.

I mean James had almost no bad habits in the ring but outside was a totally different story. He very famously never worked out, didn't jog, didn't lift weights, didn't jump rope he just sparred all the time. He was also preparing for the day when he'd have to challenge Ricky Hatton to a pie eating contest.

Lack of motivation was such a rough thing for Toney but also I kinda love fat sack of shit Toney beating up Heavyweights and sometimes I don't know if I love that more than Super Middleweight Toney battering the shit out of Iran Barkley

Would of liked to see them have a rematch at a heavier weight class, Toney moved up a weight class directly after RJJ, the weight cut must of had some affect in his performance considering but ultimately I think RJJ was just way too fast at the lighter weight classes for Toney to counter.

Don't know what you watched T.S. because I loved this fight. Both supremely confident skilled fighters, but one was just better. The fact that you think it was a horrible fight is honestly a testament to how great Roy was was in his prime. He could make great fighters look average or even bad at times. He neutralized Toney with foot and hand speed, and combination punching. Toney has a great poker face but he must have thought WTF most times after Roy would let his hands go.
