“(He was) a good human being — he added to society, he was a good person, everyone loved him,” Shields said.

Jake's right.

You can't "blame someone for getting murdered" because they walk around at 2:30 am.

There should never be blame attached to anyone for just living their life without fear, be they a man, woman or child.

Victim blaming is the lamest aspect of mass discourse. Someone always stoops to it.

Shields tries so hard to be one of those right wing personalities on social media. It is truly pathetic.

That being said, anyone blaming the guy for being murdered needs to really shut the fuck up. Jake is right about this. You shouldn't have the expectation to be murdered when you are out at night. That is a sick belief.

As a feel good sentiment or some ideal, I can agree with this. In the real world, while I wouldn't go so far as to blame the victim for bad things happening to them, there are plenty of cases where the victim's actions absolutely invite what happens to them. I don't think this is one of of those cases, but the type of blanket sentiment you're putting out there is just going to embolden more people to say "Well sure it's the bad part of town, and sure there is a huge wave of thefts and stabbings there, but I am absolutely not to blame if something happens to me if I visibly wear my Rolex walking down there - so out I go!" That's a caricature, but if people knowingly feel like it's fine to put themselves in risky circumstances because they feel that if they're victims they are in no way responsible, I'd say we start calling the victims dumbasses when they do dumbassed things. It will probably save a lot of hardship.

No idea of your lifestyle, but if you've ever been on a night out or been to a bar or a pub, chances are you walked home at 2:00 am on a few occasions.

This isn't about 'risk', it's about blame.

Can you minimise risk? Sure! You can spend your whole life minimising risks in any number of situations, but walking around in the early hours isn't something I consider particularly risky, or blameworthy, or shameful.

In my experience, being out late at night in a city isn't particularly risky; in fact, the worst I have ever seen or experienced is a fist fight, so, again to me, it's absolutely ludicrous to hear people say "Oh yeah, but he---" after a dude gets murdered like this.

All of the blame, 100 % of it, goes to the attacker.

None of the blame, 0 % of it, goes to the victim.

I initially read that as “Brooke” Shields.
It's Broke Shields given how hard he has been trying to become an influence-grifter online post retirement.

I do love how the entirety of right wing rage-masturbators are up in arms over a single dude getting stabbed wandering around late at night specifically because the guy was rich and it happened in San Francisco.
I wonder how many threads and pages this will total?

Shields is a right wing personality. He was beating up antifa members at Berkeley 6 years ago.

Agree...but people that comment on this stuff know where the blame lies. They also know those who are to blame don't care and will never read a forum about it (nor would anyone similar to the murderer.)

The reason the dialogue focuses around the victim's behavior is that those reading the replies are more like the victim than they are the assailant. He may have had more $ than almost everyone reading this (or most any other) forum, but the mindset of nearly all the readers would be from the perspective of the one who was stabbed. Not the (likely) vagrant that stabbed him.

Me, you...and I'd hope every other poster here doesn't relate to someone who'd randomly stab someone else on the street. But we can relate to a guy just back to visit his hometown. And we can have sympathy and know he's not to "blame" while also saying "Man...in a town I left because I didn't think it was safe enough anymore, don't think I'd be out walking around at 2:30 am." It's not trashing the guy, we know he's not to "blame".

Cliffs version is: I can't control if there are psychos with knives wanting to gut me at 2 am in a given place. I can control if I'm there for them to be able to do it.

He was probably looking to get murdered, some would say he was asking for it
The responsibility for the act lies with the perpetrator, but you have to take precautions and not be so careless to put yourself in situations like this.

Why was this dude walking out by himself in the Mission district, a super dangerous area of SF, at 2AM?
Probably getting going to some after hour bar or trying to keep the party goin. There’s a bunch of speakeasy type bars in that area.

I hate the blue hairs too buddy but I’m not blind to the pandering that Jake does. It is clear as day what he is trying to do. Don’t be a fool.

The guy supposedly left San Fran due to fear of crime yet is walking around alone at 2:30 am while being a millionaire? Doesn't seem very intelligent.

If only victim blaming didn't apply when police are involved
