Media Jaime Varner pulls out of fight 5 minutes before walkout

When Varner was at his best he could beat just about any LW of his era.

Exposed makes it sound like Barboza was never any good. Good upset performance by Varner I’ll admit.
I disliked him for a long time because of the stupid stuff he said after Bendo choked him out but I think I think it was because I was a bigger fan of Bendo and Cerrone.

Yea I should clarify. Barboza was undefeated at the time, and Varner exposed his boxing skills weren’t at the level they needed to be and he struggled when being pressured.

I didn't know Tim Welch used to corner Varner. Varner was an absolute beast in his day, anxiety is a bitch.

This happened in late 2012 (since Welch said he fought and beat Guiillard weeks later) - at that time Tim Welch was just 22 years old.

He was a fighter too at the time, but it's crazy to think a 30-fight veteran with multiple UFC fights would be using a young up-and-coming fighter as one of his lead cornerman.

Is there any confirmation of this? I know he says "I was with him when we're about to walk out" which implies he was one of his cornermen. Just wondering because not only is that a crazy story but the situation is even more outlandish on top of that.

"He was sick all day, but he still wanted to fight. He was throwing up backstage. The doctor checked him out and he determined he couldn't go. It's just one of those things, like an athlete training for the Olympics for four years and then getting sick the week he's supposed to go."
That is so bullshit. Respect to Varner for even fighting, but in the context of things, he was a bitch

The guy seemed snake-bitten: broke his hand in the Lauzon fight, injured his ankle in the Krause fight, and virtually knocked himself out in the Dober fight. He also seemed a bit fragile mentally.
He started developing CTE symptoms early such as slurring his speech. He also mentioned going all out in sparring against light heavyweights.

Crazy how people once spoke about Varner in the same breath as Bendo, Pettis, or Cerone. He's one part of the WEC invasion that didn't pan out.

i mean, at his very best he could go with those guys, the problem was he was extremely inconsistent.

Yea I remember an interview Varner did where he warned fighters about sparring in practice and said to save it for the actual fights

Crazy how your brain and your “feelings” can be so out of wack.

the fight they're talking about is the first guillard scheduling. varner pulled out right before it and the fight was rescheduled immediately and varner ended up winning.

If Wikipedia is right, I'm wrong as fuck.

After retiring from MMA in 2014, Varner continued his studies that were interrupted when Varner got into the UFC. Eventually Varner graduated with major from marketing and a minor in financing. After graduating he worked at Boston Scientific before transitioning to the stem cell domain.

Hell, that's nothing. Jamie Varner pulled out of his first fight against Cerrone literally in the middle of the fight.
