Just re-watched there first fight, wow that was close (and entertaining) but I can see why the judges sided with Rockhold.

Luke showed more control in the stand up, and although Jacare effectively countered it wasn't enough to slow Rockhold down or sway the judges. Jacare was definitively hitting harder (as it showed on Lukes face), it's to bad he wasn't able to string together some better combinations.

I give Jacare the nod in the wrestling/grappling area of the fight as he did land some good takedowns, however since he was unable to do much with them the judges may not have seen this as a relevant factor.

Both men showed great cardio and heart, but I think Lukes kicks, and Jacares over commitment to power punches in the earlier frame slowed him down a bit.

IMO, Luke had more tools and an overall better game plan. Also I think Jacare got a little over excited in the first round when he wobbled Luke, and may have had a mild adrenaline dump as he chased for the ko.

Can't wait to see the rematch (I'm pretty sure Luke will beat Bisbing) I expect Luke will employ close to the same game plan he had in their first encounter, as it seems to be his bread and butter, and also very effective. IMO this fight will come down to how much Jacare has improved since there first fight. If he can be a little more defensive on the feet, and still counter effectively, while using his striking more to set up takedowns, Jacare can pull this off. That being said Luke is no pushover, his kicks are as brutal as ever, that combined with his size advantage could make this rematch a reenactment of their first encounter.

What say you sherdog

Jacare has improved his striking since that first fight. He's a little slicker and has better, more refined delivery on his shots.

The rematch should be a doozey. Not sure who takes it.

I've scored 3 rounds for Rockhold, but it was pretty close indeed. I still think that Rockhold's a better fighter though and I'd pick him again in a rematch.

Rockhold by tko, Luke has sharpened and refined his game a lot too. He has improved more than Jacare, who still looks so tight and mechanical when striking.

I thought Luke won as well, but agree that it was close. Rematch should be great. I think they've both improved a lot since then.

Lukes standup has only gotten better since then as well as his ground game.

Jacare can win but it will either be by lucky punch or a snap sub.

I just think rockhold has el3vated his game so much that id those 2 scenarios dont play out rockhold will control the fight and finish souza.

Romero deserves the winner of rockhold vs bisping more than Jac does. Romero's suspension will be over by then. Whether or not people think jac got robbed vs romero in that fight at the end of the day it still reads W on Rom's record and L on Jac's

Yup me too, I had it 3 rounds for Rockhold, and 2 rounds for Jacare, it was close but I was clear to me that Rockhold won 48-47. Rockhold has improved a lot since then, he was still quite raw back then, Jacare is pretty much the same as he was back then. Rockhold would stop him this time I reckon

The middleweight scenario will be pretty interesting in a couple of months - especially if Luke does beat Bisping.

Even though I think Luke was really the winner in the first fight, Jacaré can make a case for a rematch. Not only that, he has just absolutely destroyed Vitor Belfort. But then on the other hand we have Romero, with his impressive winning streak, already cleared to fight.

And then we also have Chris Weidman, who had a rematch scheduled. I'm not a fan of immediate rematches, but well, he did have it scheduled, so he's a name in the title picture whether we like it or not. And Mousasi. And Whittaker.

Wow. Who would have thought, MW?

I thought Jacare definitely won that fight against Rockhold.

I see Rockhold winning more decisively in a rematch, but I could be wrong

I had Luke winning 3-2, but I was impressed by both fighters and actually became a bigger fan of Jacare in the aftermath.
It is absolutely "the" fight I am looking forward to at MW currently.
I'd favor Luke but if Jacars hurts him early again I think he finishes this time, his gas tank can't match Luke's if it goes deep though.
Luke would be the 60/40 favorite, IMO.

god bless your soul for actually watching it. it drives me up a wall when someone talks about a fight and it is painfully obvious they've never seen it.

cheers brother

I don't know, Jacare stand up has improved a great deal and now has lunch box s for fists.Luke Rockhold is a beast but is not unbeatable. His stand up defense can be iffy and can be chinny.Id open rockhold -140/+115----something that close.I actually think Gegard Mousasi, stylistically, would be an interesting match up with Rockhold and hed be a decent underdog(+300 or so).Gegard also a bit flatfooted but has very good stand up and iron chin.
If hed only go to Jacksons or Hume, he possibly could realize his ultimate goal---he's only 30.

All I know is I'm sick of waiting for that rematch. Seems like the UFC is happy to make immediate rematches when a champ gets dominated or finished decisively, but if there's an actually close fight between top guys they'll avoid it like the plague

It's funny how things work. Everyone on this thread was taking it as a given Rockhold would beat Bisping (hell, everybody period) and were already discussing who Luke was gonna be facing afterwards. MMA is truly the most unpredictable of sports.

For the record, Jacare/Rockhold was a pick 'em fight; insanely difficult to score. I personally scored it a draw cuz of the 4th round (if I can't pick a clear winner of a round, I don't force the issue) but if you go back and watch it in its entirety you'll see that Luke closed every round strong which definitely served to sway the judges while Jacare, who landed the bigger punches and actually wobbled Luke in the first, did most of his work in the first half of each round. Great TDD and even better scrambling from Rockhold in this one; Jacare couldn't do anything with his takedowns on the mat before Luke was on his feet.

The crazy thing about this one was that Rockhold hadn't beaten anyone that mattered at all beforehand and was coming off a 19-month injury layoff when this went down. No one had a clue how good he'd end up being and were questioning why he got the shot over more proven fighters. IIRC, Kennedy was injured and the Strikeforce MW roster was far from the deepest at the time so Luke's number was called and he ran with it! This was over 9 years ago now...
