Poirier almost killed him when they fought. I'm actually stunned he managed to turn his career back around. For a few fights after that Poirier beating he looked washed as anybody I've ever seen. Taking a short notice fight against islam while he couldn't even get back home to his camp probably wasn't a good idea, and neither was dropping to 145 to fight allen. I think those two bad career moves made things look worse than they really were for him.
